I am so excited - I have been invited to my first alum party next Sunday! My sponsor and I decided that perhaps the Dallas alums were more active, and we were right! She wrote their president, and pow! almost right away she got a response. What's more, she invited my sponsor and me to their next function, which just happens to be Sunday.

I can't wait to meet the ladies of "the sorority that must not be named" (at least for right now). I hope I will fit in - I have no idea if this is a real young group, or a varied range. They do seem to have activities each month, so they seem active and interesting.

Wish me luck - I'll keep you posted!!!

I'm hoping for Gryffindor! This would be so much easier if we had the Sorting Hat!

DeltaBetaBaby

Wouldn't that be a great way to eliminate sorority rush? Just slap the sorting hat on each of the PNM's.

Ha Ha, you cheeky people! But then who would be the "evil" Slytherin house? ha ha! (don't answer that!) ;)

FuzzieAlum
04-22-2003, 03:44 PM
LOL, I *know* what house it would be on my campus! Remember, Slytherin always had plenty of eager recruits ... I think we all know a chapter like that!

AOIIalum
04-22-2003, 04:43 PM
Does the Sorting Hat make sure that all new candidates are somewhat evenly assigned? I'd hate to see a zillion "Slytherins" and hardly any "Gryffindors" somewhere.

Just wanted to let everyone know that I had a wonderful time at the party yesterday. It was their "Senior Celebration" and they honored the graduating seniors. They each told what they were going to be doing next year - several going to grad school. The alums were very nice. I had a good chat with several of them and all seemed very open to AI. The hostess is also a Texas grad - so my sponsor and I had "old home week" with her talking about Austin.

They all just seemed really glad that I was interested in them, and even though I was nervous, they really made me feel at ease. I believe I can see myself as part of this group.

So now I wait....
But I want to thank all my GC friends for all their good wishes - that made the day even easier to know how many were thinking of me!!

My sponsor lent me some of her "Gryffindor" magazines so I could read about the sorority. (I'm just calling it Gryffindor instead of ABC or somesuch) I looked at all the info. about the chapters in my area. For one chapter, I found the name of the sister-in-law of one of my best friends!! I had no idea she is Greek, much less a Gryffindor!! I have known the s-i-l for some time through another club. So I run to the phone, and leave my friend a message - screaming - "WHY DIDN'T YOU TELL ME LINDA IS A GRYFFINDOR????" I guess my friend either didn't remember or just didn't think to mention it!

Just had to laugh!!

LoL!!! I am the same exact way!!! I went to the Dallas Alumnae Panhellic Association's website in hopes that maybe I could at least *try* to narrow it down, but alas, there are 20 sororities represented in the Dallas area!! Gryffindor is that house that Harry Potter is in at his school "Hogwarts".

Liz (tinydancer) is using "Gryffindor" as a pretend sorority name, because, in the interests of being discreet, she does not want to reveal the sorority's "real name" just yet! :D (You know, not to jinx it and all that!)

Also, in a different thread, some of us were saying, "Wouldn't it be easier if instead of Rush, we could plop a 'sorting hat' on all the rushees' heads (again, from Harry Potter) and then the rushees would know which house they truly belonged in.

Oh, and I think I chimed in, then which sorority would be the evil Slytherin house?...LOL

05-20-2003, 07:07 PM
CutiePie, thanks for the Harry Potter clarification!! Hehehe.. I never did read any of the Harry Potter books, so I guess that's why I'm lost!

I can totally understand why she would want to keep the sorority name a secret (even I did that in my rush thread!) I just wasn't sure what a gryffindor was! Maybe I'll pick up one of those Harry Potter books for a nice summer read!

Thanks again!! :)

I don't think any two NPC sororities have identical colors all around - several use blue, for example, but none have the same combination of blue and whatever. So giving away the colors would be the same as giving away the letters.

I think this is a good hint for the colors--they're either red, white, blue, green, teal, gold, silver, yellow, buff, azure, crimson, cardinal, pink, peach, brown, mode, grey, sky, surf, sea, lavender, maroon, purple, orange, black or some combination of colors, shades and intensities!

so I thought I had better check in! I had a wonderful time at the luncheon. It was in a cute little cafe and the food was really good. But the best part was the precious women that I met (see Southern Belle Primer about precious.) The Alum chapter has about 130 members, but there were only 13 there besides me. They were also disappointed at the low turnout. I sat across from 2 neat older (older than me even-ha) ladies; one was a 50-year member. There were also several that I had met at the Senior Celebration. When they sang the grace before lunch, one of the sweet ladies said "OH - I forgot that Lizz doesn't know the words! I'm already thinking of her as a sister!"
When I was introduced, the membership chair said "Lizz is a prospective AI and she will be attending a couple of our events in the fall, and then we will start the process." They, evidently, had decided not to have any summer events.
Soooo, it looks as if I will not know anything "for sure" until fall. I was a little disappointed, because I am not the most patient person in the world. BUT, I did get a good feeling about the group, on the whole. They all were very friendly and easy to talk to. I did not feel left out or awkward, even though I was basically on my own (without my sponsor, whose grandson graduates from high school today.)
From past conversations, I think the chapter was burned a time or two by AI's who were initiated and were never heard from again. I guess I can understand why they want to make absolutely sure. I have stressed that I do plan to be active and participate in their chapter.
I wish I had something more definite to report, because everyone has been so supportive and interested in my progress. I truly thank you for that - it means a lot to me.
I think I am creeping up on my home!!

OK, so I just jumped in this board here, but I've been reading for a few weeks now...I was part of a local sorority, and we affiliated with a national, but my big sister graduated before we affiliated, so i'm looking into helping her with AI...

Tinydancer is gettin' close to membership in Gryffindor!!!
(I think I might know why you chose that code name....hmmmm?)
Lizz, you know how much it pains me to hear that you still have some waitin' to do but I would say from the sounds of things, Alum Initiation seems pretty certain. I agree that the alum chapter was probably burned by AIs in the past and having you to a few more events is just their way to reassure themselves you are going to be active and involved. Don't lose hope and keep us posted....by the way, at what point will you feel comfortable enough to tell us what GLO Gryffindor really is???

tinydancer
06-10-2003, 05:37 PM
Well, I just got a sweet email from the Gryffindor membership chair saying how glad she was that I attended their closing luncheon. She said she wanted me to get to meet more of the members so I could get a real "feel" for the group; and she wanted more of them to meet me so they could be sure that I would be a good match with them. I have liked every member that I have met so far!

I am going to be receiving their newsletter and calendar of events for next year, as she said, "so I could plan to attend." I say that sounds VERY GOOD!!;)

SmartBlondeGPhB
06-10-2003, 05:56 PM
Yeah! That sounds VERY promising. As someone who's chapter had an AI who ended up not being involved, I'm sure it's a pretty big concern for them.

I've had this exact discussion with members of a few of our alumnae chapters.

I would also say this. Compared to other stories PNAMs have told, it's a GREAT sign that she's contacting you!

I *tried* to do some sleuthing, to figure out which group could POSSIBLY be Gryffindor...

I narrowed it down a little bit -- the Dallas Panhellenic has 20 representatives out of the 26 NPC orgs (assuming the site is up to date) -- which makes it look like Gryffindor could be almost anything. I'm still hoping for a Phi Mu Gryffindor, but I could be biased. :)

Ooh, we also know (from your first post) that there's also a more local (Ft Worth, perhaps?) chapter which didn't seem as active, which is why you went to Dallas....

So, it could be Alpha Phi, Phi Mu, Delta Gamma, or ZTA...since they have alum chapters in Ft. Worth.

Hmmm...I wonder if the house colors correspond to real sororities:

Gryffindor is red and gold, so corresponds with Chi Omega, and somewhat with AGD (red, buff and green).

Hufflepuff is black and yellow, so corresponds with Kappa Alpha Theta.

Ravenclaw is blue and bronze (I think...it's been a while since I read HP), so Tri Delta, AXiD.

Slytherin is green and white, so that corresponds with Kappa Delta (sorry....don't shoot the messenger, I am just having fun with colors. I think AEPhi has green too)

I don't know if I have the Hogwarts colors totally accurately, so feel free to dig out those books and correct me! :D

Actually I think you're right. I think the Hogwarts houses each have 1 metallic color (i.e. gold or silver and then their regular color), but I can't remember.

A few minutes later... Okay, I stand corrected, these are the colours (ah the miracle of the Internet)

Gryffindor: house colours are gold and scarlet.
Slytherin: house colours are silver and green (aephi alum, you are safe!!)

Ravenclaw: house colours are blue and bronze (Ooh, I like, just add pink and you have DG! ;) )

I don't think so. I reread GoF in preparation for the release of OotP, and I don't remember anything about school colors... I do recall that Durmstrang and Beauxbatons weren't subdivided into houses as Hogwarts was.

I guess then we AOIIs would be in Gryffindor. . . Our colour is cardinal which is a red just as scarlet is a red. We don't have a 2nd color so. . . .

We could always go by the Quidditch team colours (I know it doesn't go with the original post comparing the AI sorority to Gryffindor. . . ).

Appleby Arrows: Pale blue with silver arrows (Pi Phi?, TPA?)
Ballycastle Bats: Red and black (AOII?)
Caerfilly Catapults: Light green and scarlet (AGD?)
Chudley Cannons: Orange and black
Falmouth Fallons: Dark gray and white
Holyhead Harpies: Dark green and gold
Kennmare Kestrals: Emerald green and yellow
Montrose Magpies: Black and white
Pride of Portree: Deep purple and gold (DPhiE?)
Piddlemere United: Navy and gold (AXiD? DDD?)
Tutshill Tornadoes: Sky blue and navy (KKG)
Wigtown Wanderes: Blood red and silver
Wimbourne Wasps: Black and yellow (Theta)

Quidditch Through the Ages doesn't give the colours for any teams outside the UK and Ireland so I'm not able to lengthen the list. :)

Guess I have too much time, huh?!

Tom, I see your threatening to delete this thread as a slap in the face to tinydancer and her quest for AI. So what if she can't reveal names yet? You don't like it because you think it's boring? Give me a friggin' break! Last time I checked, "boring threads" aren't a violation of the Terms of Service. Don't abuse your mod status. You'll piss off a lot of people that way.

tinydancer, I'm sorry to contribute to letting this get O/T. I really am enjoying reading about your road to AI and I wish you the best of luck!

I'm wishing you luck too sweetie! Right now I am reading the first Harry Potter book so I can't participate in the color thread!

OOh Teeny...thanks for having tinydancer's back, sister! I think I speak for mostly everyone in this thread when I say thanks for having OUR backs! http://superbabies.homestead.com/files/bow.gif

Michelle's .02 cents, (sorry its long)

Please lets not get too nasty on this thread and everyone concerned needs to develope patients (myself included).;)

As others had mentioned "It is not wise to count your chickens before they hatch". That said, it would not be wise for Tinydancer, others, and myself to reveal GLOs until we've been told Yes we are going to be initiated on such and such date. :D

Personally, I do not see any reason to delete the thread b/c rush & bid day etc, for most GLOs doesn't start until mid to late August and for others not until September.
Lets evaluate the AI threads after September when most of the prospective alum initiates will know exactly where they stand before threads are arbitrary ereased/deleted of of the Alum Involvement forum. In my case I will be working with the advising team and going thru the prospective alumna initiate program so I cannot reveal the GLO choice that was mutual.

Ok I'm done and off my soap box now.;)

I sincerely hope that this is a joke that is going over all of our heads. If it is not, I'm truly disgusted by your threat to abuse your power as the forum moderator, Tom. If tinydancer does not want to reveal her choice in her quest for AI, then that is her choice, not yours. You can not force her to do so just because you want to know and think banter in here annoying. No rules of GC have been violated in this thread.

Please also refer to the many other threads above mine in the thread as they also convey what I'm thinking right now very well.

Sorry for the hijack, tinydancer, best of luck in your AI quest and we hope you can reveal your choice soon, but do it in your own time.

Well, I have to say, I've been reading this thread from the beginning, and I've read Tom's posts for a long time, and I'm surprised anyone is getting stressed about his post! It's a joke folks! (and on the off chance it's not, then Tom, lay off the funny cigarettes).

I just hope tinydancer knows that the majority of us are very supportive of her, including us moderators, and that not all of us are jerks.

I guess my tone was not conveyed well either. I totally understand that tone is hard to convey on-line...I try to take care in all of my posts to be as pc as possible, and consider everyone's feelings...I said I was surprised, but that doesn't mean I think someone who took his post seriously was in the wrong. I've just gotten the impression that no one takes Tom seriously when he says things like that...there's obviously something else going on I know nothing about.

No offense was meant by my post, and I apologize if I hurt your feelings-it was not intended. Mea Culpa. I'll do better next time.

I'd have to agree with others on here. I thought his post was very serious. Since I wasn't on for a couple of days, I have the benefit of reading it all at once and seeing the whole thing and knowing not to "stress" but I would have if I had seen it right away.

Considering it's only June, we probably have a while to wait on this one.....

Hi all,
I just wanted to chime in as well. July-August can be a quiet time for alumnae; people go away on holidays, etc. Hang in there tinydancer, things will pick up again in the fall! We will all wait for your big announcement when you can shout it from the rooftops and everyone can know your happiness. Until then, hang in there (I am a bit of a cautious person and I believe in the "not counting the proverbial chickens before they've hatched philosophy").

Sending you supportive hugs across the border...... :D

Keeping sane??? Well, I'm in a musical that opens Aug. 21 (Kiss Me, Kate) so the rehearsals are at least keeping me busy. Also, I am sad to say, I am writing this from my school library - yep, teachers report back today.:( Boooooo.....
