Oooh, I was wondering when someone was going to start a trivia thread. I'm looking forward to brushing up on my frat ed! I know the camp was in Michigan, but I don't remember dates. Something tells me I'm not going to do well on these questions!

Okay, I remember the Michigan part too, but I am with Greeklawgirl, I don't know how well I will do. It closed when we changed out philanthropy to the foundation and also to all of Diabetes, not just juvenile diabetes. I am going to guess in the 1970's. The first chapter owned house was a house the Emily Butterfield designed, right? I remember reading how every corridor and stairwell and the entire house's makeup had a meaning to it. But maybe it was the Beta chapter because they were colonized by the time that house was built I am sure. I could be wrong.
I am probably wrong, but it is a stab in the dark!

I know Emily designed Alpha's chapter house but wasn't the first owned house Beta? I have no clue on the year though...that's my guess anyway!

The chapter house question was info that I had gotten directly from an old New Member Manual. It isn't Beta, but it is one of the single-lettered chapters. http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/wink.gif
I also have another trivia question that I hope yall can answer (because I sure don't know the answer!). Do any of you know who wrote "The Alpha Gam Girl"?
LeslieAGD

Darn! I knew it was one of the early chapters...no clue on "Gam Girl" though

Hey Girls,
I noticed that the Chi Omega and Delta Zeta threads have a Trivia post, and honestly, I just wanted to add another post so the lighbulb would light up http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/wink.gif
So, here's my trivia question: Where was the Camp located? When did it open/close?

I *THINK* it opened in 1920 in Jackson, Michigan. I have no idea when it closed, though. I remember this question from the new member test.
Another good AGD trivia question to ask:
When was the first chapter-owned house purchased? And by which chapter?

Someone please post the answer! This is driving me nutty! http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/smile.gif

In 1912, the Iota chapter at the University of Washington purchased the first chapter-owned house. http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/biggrin.gif

The camp was in Jackson, MI, only about 45min from Zeta Alpha and Alpha Beta chapters! And yes, Emily did design the Alpha house. She's my girl!! And being that I am obsessed with Emily Helen Butterfield...for which fraternity did she design their coat of arms?

Hey girls...FYI, the camp was opened in 1920 (but now I can't find the closing date http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/frown.gif )
Anyway, here's a new, multiple part question (it's kinda hard)...In what years were the Alpha Gamma Delta Foundation and the Sisters In Need Fund (Sisters Income Supplement) established and what were they originally called? Also, in what years did the names change?
Hint: The SIS was named after a Sister.

Okay, our new member manual says the camp was open for over 25 years so I am guessing it closed in like 1946.

Okay, I'm going to bump this because we have no answers to two questions AND I think this is a fun thread.

I will post responses when I get home from work. I can't seem to remember now so I have to pull out my member manual!

Okay, here are the answers to my questions:
The Louise Leonard Fund was established in 1954 and later incorported into the Founder's Memorial Fund (established 1959) in 1974 when it became SIS. In 1990, the Founder's Memorial Fund became the Alpha Gamma Delta Foundation...and the rest is history... http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/wink.gif
Ready for the next question?
In the five years following our founding, eight chapter were chartered. Why was this such as remarkable record?

Oooh, oooh, I think I remember this one! If I remember correctly, it was because transportation and the mails were still incredibly slow. Cross-country travelling was very difficult at the time--so eight chapters in five years was an accomplishment.

GreekLaw, you are correct! How about another...
In what year did we become an international organization? What was the Chapter name and the University it was founded at?
greeklawgirl
07-07-2001, 03:55 PM
OK, I think I may be on a roll. I think it was in 1919 with the University of Toronto. (Tau chapter?)
Other AGDs--feel free to jump in here and let me know if I'm wrong or right! http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/biggrin.gif

Greek law you are correct!! We became International with the Tau chapter at the University of Toronto and you even got the year right (that is one of my fav fun facts since we were FOUNDED to be an International org.)

Yay! I can't believe I remembered that. I guess I'm not as rusty as I first thought!

Ok, guys, here's a multipart question:
What is the name and Greek meaning of our mascot?
Which chapter chose it, and what was the reason behind the choice?
Lisa Fishman

Skiouros the squirrel made it's debut at Gamma Chapter in 1906. Skiouros means "shady tail" or squirrel in Greek. Gamma is Wesleyan Univ. in Middletown, Conn. Skiouros was chosen because squirrels prepare for the future by stocking up on accorns in the fall to have in the winter. This represents that we should all prepare for our futures.

Here's another question for you all. What year did Founders Day (May 30)switch to the presently celebrated, International Reunion Day(3rd Sat. in April)?
LeslieAGD

Finally I get to play too! IRD was changed in 1936 because many college and universities were either closed for Memorial Day or taking final exams!
Here's another question:
Who were the initial seven founders? Which of them was unable to attend the first meeting and why?
greeklawgirl
07-09-2001, 01:55 AM
Hee hee! I don't remember all seven founders, but I'll knock out the most obvious three: Marguerite Shepard, Estelle Shepard Beswick, and Jennie Titus Smith Morris. I'm not sure about the other four.
One of the original seven was unable to attend the first meeting because she was recuperating from a serious illness.

the answer to the question about the What is an Alpha Gam? is that it was written by a sister at Murray State here in KY. I don't know her name or anything else.

Besides Estelle, Marguerite, and JTSM, the other initial founders were Georgia Dickover, Ethel Brown (Distin), Grace Mosher (Harter), and Edith MacConnell (Hickok). Edith was the sister unable to attened and Maria was right; she was in the hospital recuperating from a serious accident.
Here's another question:
What field(s) of study was Dr. Coddington a professor of?

Okay ladies, I'm so excited! I just bought a 1931 AGD Quarterly that purports to be the first comprehensive history of the Fraternity! I've had lots of fun looking through it...there are so many tidbits that I didn't learn in Frat Ed.
Dr. Coddington, among many things, taught Greek, ethics, and philosophy.
The serious accident that Edith MacConnell had was that she slipped and fell on some ice while at Syracuse. It took her nearly a year to completely recover. In fact, the first and only time that all our Founders were under one roof together occurred on May 12, 1905, at the first Alpha Gamma Delta reunion banquet (which I believe is the predecessor to IRD).

Leslie, I found the Quarterly on e-bay. The seller had a buy-it-now option, so I snapped it up. I knew I had to have it, so I didn't think twice about buying it as soon as I saw it (even if it was $30...ouch! http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/frown.gif )
Another interesting factoid: the Alpha Gamma Delta Hymn is not an original song. Rather, it was revised from a song written for the local sorority Zeta Epsilon, which became our Gamma chapter in 1906.
Hmmm, maybe I should start a new thread and post one new factoid a day? What do you girls think?

I say do it! The more we know, the better! I seriously doubt that anyone in my chapter would know half the things I learn here...

It is a running joke at my chapter that if you need to know anything about AGD you come to me. Is this the same at anyone elses chapter for themselves?

Well, being that I'm the designated Internet junkie for my chapter... http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/eek.gif people also tend to come to me for information. They say that I come in handy when it's time for the NMs to take their tests. http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/biggrin.gif

When did AGD become incorporated?

I don't know that answer but looking at the Burr Patt website made me think....
Wasn't the "double rose" as in necklace, charm, etc. initally called the "rosedrop"??
Or does my memory seemed to have dropped? ;) :D
Practicing for convention :D

I thought rosedrop was one of those terms like "big or little sister" that some chapters have adopted. They are not correct-but they are descriptive.:)

More fun facts... the Hymn actually has a third verse- you can find it in old songbooks. I have no idea why they dropped it- but maybe they used to do more singing in the "olden days."
