Yea it is very funny a little controversial for some but I love it. A couple of weeks ago my fiance surprised me and took me to see him here in Houston. He was very funny he stayed on stage for like 3-4 hours, he was funny even when he ran out of material.

I love that show. It's on the edge, but it's so silly. The only part I saw last night was the parodies of the R.Kelly videos. It was in bad taste, but I couldn't stop laughing!

Dave Chapelle is the man! Soooo funny. Since we seem to have lost Chris Rock (am I the only one who thinks Head of State looks un-funny) it's nice to have Dave stepping up.

i don't think head of state is going to be funny at all. if i see this film it will be at a matinee or student discount--yeah i graduate but i refuse to pay full price for a film--ESPECIALLY something that looks like potential crap. i mean how many films can you make where 'the others' are imitating us  ?

The one time that I saw it, I didn't feel it was too funny. Maybe I just wasn't in the mood to be receptive to that type of humor. When I saw it, he was playing a blind black man who didn't know he was black who was a racist Klan leader. Okay, the concept was at least laughable, but I guess he just went too far when he kept using the "N" word, and I just felt it was in poor taste for a show that plays to 'mixed' company. Some of the other shows that you guys have mentioned sound funny enough though.

i remember that epi and i too was cringing over the use of the 'n' word but i was so taken aback by the concept that for me it overshadowed the 'n' word usage. dave chapelle can be very vulgar but if you can look past that, i think you will find him much more enjoyable.

I have seen Dave Chapelle's stand up quite a few times and I never thought that he was funny. I figured that the show wouldn't be funny either, but it really is. Conversations with a black man and the real version of popular movies are hilarious.

I saw the show for the first time this past weekend. I was shocked that he was repeatedly allowed to use the "N" word, but was censored when other curse words were used. I think that sends a pretty strong message about what is acceptable on television these days, but thats a whole other topic.

OMG Cedric's show was such a "wanna be" Carol Burnett Show (sketches, dancing numbers, etc.). Whomever came up with that formula for Ced's show should go back to doing high school theatre.
I love the Chapelle show. He is a good replacement for The Chris Rock show. :(

I love Dave Chappelle.... I am not PC at all and people are just mad that Dave tells it like it is! My Favorite sketches are:
The Niggar family... "I bet that you will get the best seat a niggar has ever gotten in this place" LOL!!!
R Kelly ... "The only thing that will make my life complete is when I turn your face into a toilet seat"
Black/White Supremacist... "Big black noses breathing all the white man's air!" I was on the floor!
Racial Draft... SP? "Kenishwa Bitches!"
That's all for now!

"Honey, this is the Niggar I was telling you about..."
R. Kelly's doo-doo butter...
How about when he was talking about Flipper... "Run! It's James! The n***a hatin' dolphin!" LMBAO :p
But I laughed so hard when he played the KKK member who discovered he was black and then divorced his white wife for being a n***er-lover...

Whoever hasn't seen it yet, WTH have u been???? This is one of the funniest shows on Comedy Central (it's a tie btwn this and Crank Yankers). Negrodamus and the Racial Draft were tow of the funniest skits I saw on this show, as well as "The Real World" where a Caucasian guy moved in with a bunch of Black people. That was toooooo funny. I just wish I had DVR....... :(

OMG, I loved that skit. And it was soooo true because The Real World always has a house full of white people with one black person and they end up feeling "threatened" enough to ask the one black person to leave.
Oh, but my favorite was when crack head Tyrone went to the elementary school to talk to Ms. Phelps class about drug awareness. Hilarious.

Okay maybe I am uptight- but I did NOT see the humor in the Niggar family. I cringed the entire time . . .I think he is riding a fine line allowing "others" to use that term - I am waiting for a little white kid to relay that skit to one of his friends, be overheard by a little brother and get socked in the mouth. "ot:eek: (not that i am promoting that - but I can see it). I don't know - I just wasn't amused - my friends, however, thought it was hilarious. I guess he is attempting to take the edge and negativity away from the word - use it and erase the negative connotations, but there is so much history and hurt behind that word . . .something to think about.

I'm in a quandry. I watch the show and laugh at some of it--but the humor is pretty base. I sometimes wonder if the majority culture is watching and laughing with (or at) us. :(
... and yeah I know it's just a comedy show and not to take it too seriously.

i don't feel your opinion was uptight :). i see what you are saying and have felt the same way at different times. as an expectant mother, i have no intention of allow my child to watch programming that is age appropriate. i do wonder about the same things you and tonyb06 do in terms of the types of things that we as black people embrace and find humour in and how it can be interpreted or misinterpreted. some days i think we have to not take ourselves so seriously and perhaps take things for what it is.
as hateful as the word nigger is, sometimes i think it helps that we as a people have the ability to take something so awful and turn it around. i appreciate the fact that with all that our people have gone through we have the ability to laugh at ourselves to lessen the deep pain. that survivor instinct is a wonderful quality.
thanks so much for sharing your thoughts. i do hope that you at least like paul mooney. i have seen him perform and he is well worth the money and time!

The Charlie Murphy True Hollywood Stories takes the cake. Hilarious!!! I think Rick's slurred speech is due to the drugs and didn't he have a stroke or heart attack last year?
Also Rick James, Tina Marie and Morris Day and The Time are doing an old school concert here in Detroit next month. My hubby really wanted to go see Rick but after seeing the Chappelle show and his slurred speech he is having second thoughts.
Has anyone seen him in concert lately? How did he sound?

SHOWTIME RE-ENTERS STAND-UP COMEDY ARENA
With ONE-HOUR SPECIAL starring DAVE CHAPPELLE
New York, NY, October 27, 2003 -- SHOWTIME makes its return to the stand-up comedy milieu with comedian Dave Chappelle. The deal, which was announced today by Robert Greenblatt, President of Entertainment for Showtime Networks Inc., calls for Chappelle to star in an upcoming one-hour comedy special. The special will be taped from a live event during the spring of 2004 at a venue to be determined. It is slated to air in early summer.
SHOWTIME has a rich history in stand-up comedy and has spawned the careers of such talent as Tim Allen, Garry Shandling, Ellen DeGeneres, Denis Leary, Brett Butler, Robert Schimmel, and many others. The network also broadcast the Montreal Just For Laughs International Comedy Festival for a number of years with such hosts as Mary Tyler Moore, Bob Newhart, Lily Tomlin, Kelsey Grammer, the late John Candy and others.
Robert Greenblatt stated, "SHOWTIME is proud to return to its stand-up roots. There are some very edgy and talented comedians out there and we want to showcase them. Now more than ever, the American public has a huge appetite for great humor. Dave Chappelle is a polished comedian whose irreverent commentary goes way beyond his young years. I'm thrilled that someone with his talent is on board with SHOWTIME as we come back to stand-up in a very big way. Comedy connoisseurs out there are in for a very big treat."
Chappelle, one of comedy's preeminent stars, earlier this year completed his DAVE CHAPPELLE IS BLACKZILLA COMEDY TOUR, which hit 60 markets with 95 sold-out shows over a 12-week run. This past winter marked the debut of the critically lauded "Chappelle's Show" on Comedy Central, which will begin its second season in January 2004. Additionally, he has appeared in his own one-hour comedy special, "Killin' Them Softly." Theatrically, Chappelle was most recently seen in the Universal Pictures feature UNDERCOVER BROTHER opposite Eddie Griffin. His other feature film roles include Mel Brook’s ROBIN HOOD: MEN IN TIGHTS, THE NUTTY PROFESSOR, CON AIR, HALF BAKED, YOU'VE GOT MAIL and BLUE STREAK.
Chappelle is represented by UTA, Rick Greenstein and attorney Matt Johnson.

Man the Lil John Skits are classic. That mess is the funniest thing I've seen in a long time. I have to give it to Dave on that one. When he was in the Dr's office...ROTF. I had to call my sisters via 3 way and we were all dying. I was laughing so hard that my Mother had to ask me the next day what was I laughing at. She recalled seeing on of the skits and started laughing so hard she was crying. I hope his special on Showtime is funny as the show.

I did see the first 4-5 eps when they originally premiered on Comedy Central, but I found the constant commercial interruptions and the shortness of the shows too distracting. So I waited until they came on DVD and then watched them all in one sitting (or three, actually). Besides, the uncensored bleep-free dialogue makes it more "realistic".
The funniest skits since In Living Color. I swear, Dave picked up where Keenan and the Wayans left off.
Oh, and the Pilot Boy Productions line, "I'm rich, [Miss]!" The most original TV production line since, "Sit, Ubu, sit. Good dog. *bark*"
Funny stuff all the way.

I Did It! I Did It! Yippeee I got to see Dave live!
I was able to go to his show here in Tampa at the Improv Friday and I have to say it was hilarious!! Dave talked about everything from how hearing " I'm Rick James B****" was getting on his nerves to how the Government uses Michael Jackson as a distraction for the War. It was so hard to catch my breath! And Dave had definitely smoked some wacky tobaccky! He could barely stand up for long. Never the less he was absolutely brilliant with some of his observations...
If you have the opportunity to see him... do it... it's worth it.

I saw him last night.
I laughed soooooooooo hard, I started crying. :D
Dave is stoopid! He's wayyyyyyyy out there!
-I loved his comparison of 15 year olds (re: Rra Kelly and the "victim")
-Elizabeth Smart (she wasn't too smart) and the (forgot her name) little black girl in Philly who was kidnapped and escaped
-He found the American Indian in Wal-mart; he wanted to know if the man really was Native American so he throws the gum wrapper on the floor and a tear rolls down the Indian's face.
Lawd, he's a mess!
If I were a bootlegger, I could have EASILY taped this show. ;) :o
My friend (who has never seen his show) asked were we going to see Dave Chappelle or Steve Martin (the show was 90% non-AA).

Funny you should say that...
Other than maybe two or three more ... we were the biggest group of AA in the audience. Every time he referenced AA he would look up at us as if to get some conformation. The jokes about R. Kelly and the Indian were too much. " Black Face"!
When we left... I was so tired... of laughing

Dave Chappelle Inks $50 Mil Comedy Deal

By Andrew Wallenstein
NEW YORK (Hollywood Reporter) - Dave Chappelle has signed a massive deal with Comedy Central that will return the comedian's hit series to the network for two more seasons.
AP Photo
Sources familiar with the deal indicate it could be worth about $50 million, vaulting Chappelle, 30, into the rarefied realm of television's top earners. The new contract is believed to mark not only a steep increase for Chappelle as star, writer, co-executive producer and co-creator of "Chappelle's Show," but more significantly, reward him with a hefty chunk of the series' robust DVD sales.
Increasing the pressure on Comedy to close a megadeal with Chappelle was interest from other programers eager to tap his talents, including NBC Universal Television Group, according to sources, which ultimately deemed Chappelle too expensive. FX is said to have made an eight-figure offer to lure Chappelle to the network, but to no avail.
The deal also has implications beyond Comedy for Chappelle within the network's parent company, Viacom, sources said. Another component sets up Chappelle with a multimillion-dollar deal at Paramount Pictures to star in an adaptation of the autobiography of Rick James, the funk veteran whom Chappelle has lampooned on "Chappelle's Show." He may also be tapped for a different film project.
In addition, the contract is said to establish a development deal for Chappelle's production company, Pilot Boy Prods., with managing principal Mustafa Abuelhija. The pair already has a project under consideration at Comedy featuring "Chappelle's Show" contributor Paul Mooney.
Also reaping the benefits of the deal was Chappelle's longtime partner, Neal Brennan, a director, executive producer, co-creator and writer of the series. While terms of the deal for Brennan were not disclosed, it is one of the richest deals in basic cable for a multihyphenate.
"I knew we could continue at Comedy Central," Brennan said. "We weren't thinking of going anywhere else."
Chappelle, who is vacationing in Paris, was not available for comment.
"Chappelle's Show" has become an important series for Comedy, scoring a trio of Emmy nominations last month and ranking as the highest-rated cable program for the network's demographic sweet spot, men 18-34, who comprised much of the 3.1 million total viewers the series averaged in its second season.
The ratings for "Chappelle's Show" not only held up well in reruns, but boosted other longtime Comedy staples including "The Daily Show With Jon Stewart" and "South Park" -- not to mention the network's strong primetime performance in the first and second quarter of the year.
"Life without 'Chappelle's Show' would not have been very bright as far as getting or exceeding those numbers again," said Lauren Corrao, senior vp original programing and head of development. "It means a great deal to growing our schedule. We're thrilled to have him back."
More important, "Chappelle's Show" has become a juggernaut on DVD, selling 1.7 million units to date of a collection of first-season episodes -- the most successful television-related DVD of the year despite minimal marketing.
Chappelle's original deal reaped barely a fraction of DVD revenues -- a source of frustration to the comedian as his second one-year deal with Comedy expired. The new deal cuts Chappelle not only a larger portion of DVD sales -- including retroactively to the first and second seasons -- but revenue from merchandising and events as well.
As DVD becomes an increasingly lucrative revenue stream for networks and studios, the format is taking a place next to syndication as a crucial deal point for profit participants. In HBO's contentious renegotiation with "The Sopranos" star James Gandolfini (news) last year, DVD also emerged as a thorny issue.
Combining Chappelle's DVD take with his per-episode salary (estimated to be in the low-middle six figures) puts him in the league of Gandolfini and fellow Comedy executive producers Matt Stone and Trey Parker of "South Park." He is also slated to partake of a syndication sale of "Chappelle's Show," which may be a remote possibility given the series' raunchy content.
Chappelle has already turned down an offer to host the upcoming sister network MTV's Video Music Awards but is said to be considering a second installment of the stand-up special he filmed for another Viacom property, Showtime, that debuts next month.
The first of 26 new episodes of "Chappelle's Show" is expected to premiere in the first quarter of next year. Each 13-episode season will consist of 10 original episodes, plus two "best-of" episodes and another devoted to music performances.
