Did you know she's a KD? :D

I support her, of course, b/c she's my sister.

But my personal opinion is that some of the bags (the larger ones!) look like glorified diaper bags to me. Hehe.

Reminds me of the whole french provincial look. I guess the whole "preppy" thing from the 80s really is coming back in style..

Personally, I wouldn't be caught dead with one of those bags. If the fabrics were used for upholstery, now that's another story. :)

not to sounds like i'm caking (i'm as straight as they come :D) or anything, but that's what i thought too....my mom has some of them and baby bags was the first thing that came to my mind.

My boss at the time got me a Vera Bradley makeup bag in a really pretty cream colored pattern w/ my monogram YEARS ago. That was the first I had ever heard of it.

I've been toting around Vera Bradleys for quite a while now. So she's getting more popular? Haha, I was actually in on the ground floor of a trend for once!

Let me think; here's pretty much all the Vera I have:

Provincial Red
Duffel Bag
Sport Bag
Garment Bag
Petite Villager
Travel Cosmetic Case
Hard Eyeglass Case (2)

My 7 and 5 year olds love Vera too! They had a great time picking out their own patterns. Their Vera patterns are, respectively Maison Blue and Hope and they each have the following:

Sport Bag (great for overnights)
Mini Backpack (when I pack them lunches, they carry them here)
Large Cosmetic Bag (carries toothbrush, toothpaste and comb)
Coin Purse (lunch money)
Teeny Paddy Bag (just TOO cute; had to buy it! lol)

I like Veras because they're really durable and they hold a lot. Plus, they're relatively inexpensive and really, really cute!

BrownEyedGirl: Much as I love Vera, I have to draw the line at monograms! That crosses the line into Preppydom :)

I love Vera Bradley!! A LOT of girls at Auburn carry Vera! My pattern is Maison Blue and I have: petite Villager, wallet, coin purse and the medium sized cosmetic bag!

I love my ditty bag in Hope, but I think my new color will be pink pansy. Does anyone have a garment bag, I want want,, but does it hold up? Have you all seen the fake ones yet?

I feel like I'm in high school again! When I was a freshman, girls started carrying the smaller diaper-bag looking things as purses, and pretty soon, EVERYBODY and their grandmother had one (even me!). My favorite pattern is Greenleaf, which is so old it's probably been discontinued forever, but that's the last piece I bought. I refuse to carry the diaper bag purses, but the makeup bags are really cute.

Sooooooo many people at my school have Veras, including many of my sisters. Some are cute... but I think I caught on to the trend a little too late, because now that everyone has one, I definitely don't want one. Although if I was going to get one, it would be one of the newer patterns, it's like a pink stripe?

BTW, gotta love all the fashion topics in Chit Chat tonight ;)

I LOVE VERA!!!!!!! OMG I have so much Vera, I dont' even know where to start listing it all. But my favorite pieces (all in the just recently discontinued black w/roses) are my makeup case and my huge tote bag! Someone is going to the For Friends store this week to buy more! Yay!
And to the poor soul who wouldn't be caught dead in them, I'm so sorry you feel that way. But I love mine!

Man, those things are DESIGNER?!?! I thought that the people who had them were carrying around their Maw-Maw's last quilting project.

My version of prep is my monogrammed Boat and Toat bag as a purse/carryall.

Maybe this thread just heightened my awareness of Vera stuff.... but geez, I swear i've seen a ton of girls carrying Vera bags today at the law school.

Might be bringing them out more b/c it's spring... they seem to be a more springy kind of bag.

But they're everywhere!!!!!

Now that I've had a look you are right....they do look like diaper bags, though much more expensive. I don't know any mom/dad willing to pay what they are probably charging for a diaper bag that looks like my grandma's bedroom. :p

And you don't need to know how to spell Provence to get a BA, unless you were a French major, like me. ;)

Funny that I should return to see this and the Lilly thread at once... I've always loved Lilly, but never really liked Vera. I thought the Bradley bags looked a little too homey and country for my taste, and definitely saw the diaper-bag ressemblance.

BUT... looking at the limited edition silks and the florals, those are DAMN CUTE! I am going to have to go get one... And they are totally cheap when you compare them to a Coach or an Anya Hindmarch!

People have done Lilly for years at my school (EE Triangle), but I don't think people are too into this whole Vera Bradley thing. It sounds like a Southern thing to me. More people do the LLBean monogrammed bag. Frankly, most of us just want a big bag for our books--which is why the LLBean and Herves are a lot more popular for day to day use than KS, VB, etc. Why pay $200 for a bag that you're putting dirty-ass books in? To look cute?

dude. I SWEAR when I was a kid my mom had a quilted bag just like those. I'm not so much into the qulited kind - but those limited edition spring ones are kinda cute. I like the bamboo flower power one. I bet it would go cute with my Payless sandals while I'm hanging out on the San Diego beaches for spring break!

personally, i think the bags are a bit old fogeyish for me
give me a coach or dior any day
i laugh at everyone who carries one

does that really go with every outfit you wear?
maybe for people who dress down and wear jeans every day
but that's why i buy GAP and American Eagle back

CTHU. I'm thinking about a L.L. Bean Boat and Tote (the bag) after seeing one in the April Lucky. It had pink trim and a pink monogram. But right now, they're only showing light raspberry.
I'm not a Vera person either, perhaps because I'm not a huge fan of country-cute looks. I do like toile de Jouy, however.

That is the exact bag I carry my books to school in (pink with monogram)... I bought it last Christmas though, and they have changed the colors that they carry since then. I have the large size, and it's holding up quite nicely. Much more durable than ANY backpack I ever had from LL Bean.

I always love to see things in magazines that you already own... makes you feel quite stylish! haha

Co-Owner and President Patricia Miller is a KD (don't remember the chapter). I don't think there's any person that exists by the actual name of "Vera Bradley." We recognized her at convention during one of the alumnae luncheons where we recognize our accomplished alumnae.

KDs are obsessed with Vera. My connection to Tuscon ran through Atlanta (the surrounding area has a ton of KD chapters), the plane was at least 1/2 KDs going both too and from convention. I knew I had the right gate when I walked up and saw all these young women with Vera Bradley EVERYWHERE.

We also sell a lot of her bags at convention in our boutique (which was HUGE this year).... they sell like hotcakes. I've still avoided the craze. Apparantly there was some sort of KD pattern (not sure if adopted by KDs informally or if she did something special for us) but it was discontinued.

KD nationally is trying to get them to name one of their patterns "Friendship" to go along with "National Women's Friendship Day" which KD created (third Sunday in September). It would be marketed at price points with signs about what the pattern stands for etc. Kind of neat!

So yes, I learned more than I ever thought I would at KD convention last week!

(Edited to add: Patricia Millers is from the Sigma Upsilon chapter at Indiana)

When I first moved up here to NC, Vera was everywhere-in TX I had never even heard of her. I thought the patterns were ugly as sin. I totally didn't understand it at all-I was like, give me my Kate Spade any day. But I have to admit...I got sucked in. My pattern is the now-discontinued Provincial Red. I've got the Teeny Paddy, and am buying the hanging organizer, travel cosmetic bag, and the Hampton-and she's coming out with new ones in July!

Ewww.... I wouldn't be caught dead carrying one of those bags. The patterns bare a striking resemblance to the fabric used on the Bible covers with straps that everyone in my family makes. It's definitely country, hick country. I do see where the diaper bag thing comes from. Blah... definitely not for me. I prefer to not look like I just came out of an episode of the Beverly Hillbillies

You took the words right out of my mouth! They're just too fuddy-duddy for my taste; as long as I don't look stupid trying to look cute, I'm not about accessorizing like I'm leading the soccer caravan. My friends from home are all about stuff like this, but then again, they were buying out Chico's at 18. So, to each her own...:D

Chico's is a store, there's one on Walnut street actually.

Also a funny thing about the diaper bag resemblance- one of the national officers, who isn't necessarily super-trendy, bought a Vera Bradley. Her friends asked her if she had made it, because she apparantly made diaper bags that looked just like it when her children were babies.

I just thought that was hilarious

It's a store that sells "elegant resort wear," it always seemed to me to be aimed at women in their late 40s/early 50s who traveled for leisure rather often and on a whim. Their stores tend to be located in well-heeled resort areas and suburbs, and occasionally a large city. Nice clothes, to be sure, but I have some years until I'm ready to wear them.

That's a pretty apt description - my upper-middle-finance-executive aunt loves Chico's - and jetting off to Bermuda on a whim.

I love Veras! It seemed like everyone in my chapter had one, though for a while we all claimed a pattern and got a little upset when others started catching on to the craze. Initially it was just a sorority member thing, then everyone at UF had one. I got my mom and sister into it, now I think I have one in just about every new pattern that comes out. Though red bandana is my original fav. Anyway, somehow you can match the bags to whatever clothing you're wearing, since some of the bags are "dressier" than others. Clearly you wouldn't take the paddy bag along to a business meeting, though the new cosmopolitan, I believe it's called, would be appropriate since it resembles a briefcase. So there you go, that's how us southern girls do it, bless your heart...;)

Any Phi Mu's out there remember an Aglaia that came out about a year ago (maybe less cant rememeber) that had Vera similar luggage on the back with monogramed letters??
there was a garment bag and a small carry on bag i think a cosmetic bag too...i remember seeing all the patterns, they were red and thinking they were not pink and how if they were i might have gotten it..LOL

does anyone know if this was Vera or Vera similar??

its funny i had been on a trip with my boyfriend and i needed a tote bag to throw some things in to go to the beach, pair of sandals etc..and i went to marshalls since it was near by..they had this little bag that looked very much like the blue vera handbag (the lil square one) when i came out of the store he was like.."whats with the diaper bag?!" lol...

i thought it was cute and it had been on clearance for 4.00 dollars...so for the beach it was just right..my sandals fit right inside.. im sure its not an original vera but everyone who sees it says they are ugly :(

i only use it for lil outings where i need a slightly larger purse.
i didnt know they were becoming a big craze.... miami doesnt seem to pick up on these "southern girl" trends

oh well

Well I gave in to the Vera Bradley craze and I ended up buying the Petal Power Tote and Petal Power Tie Backpack both in Pink. Anyone who knows me knows how much I love pink and I figure I can use the tote for books in the fall. I also bought both because I am taking a trip to DC in August and I thought they would be good for when I'm out and about! :)

I've seen the petal power patterns in purple and turquoise from working in retail (customers always have new and exciting purses!) so hopefully the pink is as cute! :D

When I went to the South East Panhellenic Conference earlier this year, a bunch of girls were carrying them around. I even heard one girl say "We should get those for our new girls on bid day!" Ditto to those who think they are "soccer mom" bags! I really don't think I've seen anyone carrying those around in Tampa, designer purses are much more common.

I'm going with my dad and meeting up with my brother...not exactly shopping companions! ;) I got them already (go UPS!) and I LOVE the pattern, maybe I'm just meant to be a soccer mom! I think the petal power pattern is geared more towards college aged women though...it's retro and fun! Of course I'm drooling over the (now discontinued :() Blue Toile and Seaport Navy patterns. I looked on the website and found a store here that sells them and I get 20% off if I mention the website...so looks like tomorrow I might be getting a Vera! ;) I want one that I can carry a book or two in - I need a new tote bag - I have a microfiber KS-knockoff Gamma Phi one that I use in winter and my current summer one is a striped A&F bag from 6 years ago that I love but am kind of sick of!

Okay, I have to laugh when I saw this thread. I just moved to North Carolina from AZ and they are everywhere here. The funny part is, when I first flew in here, I was in the RDU airport and saw this mother and daughter combo carrying VB bags (big, not purses) and my first thought was "What is up with the nerdy Grandma bags?" Obviously, they are not real popular where I was in AZ.

Then I entered grad school at NC State, and low and behold...they are ALL over the freakin' campus! What the heck happened to carrying a backpack? I am still undecided on how I feel about them. The small purses are cute as are makeup bags, but the big totes that the girls carry here are still coming off as h.s. home ec projects to me. Now, some people thought $40-$60 was a reasonable price to pay for a purse, which I agree, but not when it is quilted calico material!!

Then again, I feel sometimes like I have definitely walked into a whole different world here...I just don't get the whole 80s revival thing going on.... Please tell me that it is only happening here at NC State--b/c I just don't think I can ever bring myself to wear my polo shirts with the collars flipped up again! And don't EVEN get me started on the koozie mat'l sunglass straps! And BOAT SHOES??? I kid you not, I sometimes feel like I am walking amongst extras from some bad 80s movie....

Sorry, for the $.02 that turned into a semi-rant!:p

I am really interested that most people seem not to like the Vera bags. A LOT of people on my campus have them. They are just really handy. Barely anyone carries backpacks anymore and they are a great substitute. :) I think I could probably find almost every pattern on campus.

Anyway, I just got my first Vera bag. I'm hoping to get most of the collection in the pattern Chocolat:

Here's my VB story...

I had heard of Vera Bradley. I had never bothered to buy any of her things b/c I prefer sales racks. But, earlier on campus (I'm finishing up my degree) I saw a girl with a cute bag. I didn't want it for a purse -- I thought it would be a great diaper bag.

Well, I must have not impressed the girl with the simple t-shirt and jeans look that day. B/c when I asked her where she got her bag she said VB really quickly. Not understanding what she had said, I asked her to repeat the name. Then, she ACTUALLY asked me if I had even ever HEARD of Vera Bradley.

I thought to myself, "You little snot..." But, I remained cool and calm like a Zeta lady should :)

It just floored me that she was SO outright in being hateful.

P.S. I won't spend that kind of money on a diaper bag. lol

I was first introduced to Vera when I lived on Cape Cod a few summers ago. A lot of people have them up there. I can see how they wouldn't be prevalent in NYC though. They're not very "city".

Are you sure those aren't barf bags?

Maybe this is a regional thing, but those aren't cute. even soccer moms wouldn't use 'em for diaper bags.

Pass me a coach please! But thanks for letting me know about other bags out there.

I was just in Indianapolis last week on business, and WOW - I have never seen so many of those bags. They aren't at all common here in Chicago, and personally, they're not my style. I think they're definitely a regional thing.

I know Vera Bradley is discontinuing and redesigning all their luggage, so the duffles are on sale. I got my XL duffle for $65, and it was originally priced at $97! But Americana Red is impossible to find anywhere...

OK y'all, I caved.

I got this puppy (http://www.verabradley.com/ProductDetail.aspx?qs1=18037) on Friday. If I had the $$ or needed them I would have gotten a boatload of the accessories too.

Hey, it was my favorite colors AND paisley - what the hell was I supposed to do? :)

I would have gotten the smaller tote, but it didn't have the neato inside pockets and the strap was so short that if I put it over my shoulder, it looked like it was growing out of my pit. I hate the pit-purse effect.

I got this one a few weeks ago and I love it...I feel like it's a good purse to transtition into spring with because the colors are bright but not crazy.

I also went out and got my mom the bees tote because she coaches a high school dance team and their mascot is the hornet. It's close enough.

I'm bumping this because I'm a convert. I have my Vera (it's a nice tote) in apple green and I'm in LOOOOOOVE. My next purchase will be a small duffel for the gym and maybe a smaller handbag of some sort. They're so much prettier in person than in pictures.

Do those of you who have multiple Veras tend to stick with one pattern or get different ones? What is everyone's current favorite? I love apple green and sherbet, but I also think chocolat and seaport navy are nice.

ETA: Girlfriend would make a KILLING if she made bags in sorority colors. ;)

I Love Vera. I like to stick to one pattern as far as the luggage set is concerned.... but I have several different patterns just for the tote (to carry my books to class) and the handbags - to coordinate to outfits.

Faves:
Seaport navy - tote
Classic Black -tote
Pink Pansy -luggage set
Sherbert- hobo
Green Apple -, hobo, wallet
Bees -hobo, wallet
Emily -Betsy, wallet, eyeglass case

You can never have enough Vera. The cosmopolitan bag is gonna be my next purchase.,... but it has been hard for me to find in the lil stores I go to to buy it.

Mine are all different. Right now I'm carrying the Tote in Americana Red and I have the Petite in Maison Blue inside of it, with the strap shortened and sort of tied around the strap of the Tote to put my keys and phone in so I don't have to dig around for them. I also have the Molly in Green Apple but it's sort of summery so I'm leaving it in the closet until the spring.

this trend of vera's is liek when iw as in college with the dooney and bourke purses.... i think i had 3 different dooneys

I have pansy in a vera bag ( the large tote) and green apple in the mini backpack

They do look like quilted baby bags from w hen i was a child but i love that quilted look.

I also went to wal mart one day and was in the fabric dept and they have those panel material cutout purses to put together a wanna be vera tote bag.

so i have two vera's and one wanna be vera.

Vera isn't very popular here in CA... I think I've only seen a handful being carried around, I spent time on the east coast this summer and saw a lot of it.. but I guess it's just taking its time to come over here to the west coast ... I don't care for them too much personally... some patterns are cute but just not really my style.

So far I have the large and small duffel, garment bag, ditty bag, hanging organizer, small cosmetic bag, and the large cosmetic bag. I really do not care for the purses, but I love my luggage. I like the New Hope collection the best because it's a little less suburban-looking than some of the other fabrics and plus, all of the money they make from it goes towards Breast Cancer research which is a big plus in my book.

i loathe those patterns and bags. i know yall lovelovelove them, but i hate em. in fact, i hate em so much, i'm gonna make a list of all my reasons. haha...

1. they look like diaper bags
2. the patterns belong on old placemats in a farm house
3. the patterns are all so *boring*!!! they sort of remind me of something a granny would carry, the main thing i think of when i see them is a)granny b)country c)boring
4. i dont like the quilt look, it just adds to the grannyness

i do however sort of like the all black fabric. heaven forbid i ever start liking the granny fabrics. next thing ya know i'll be wearing a lily.... eww.

I'm not sure when the new colors come out -- I'd guess sometime in the spring, but I don't know when. I should be getting the catalog as soon as it's out, so I'll update if I hear anything.

OK, I have to know.

Do any of you Veraholics have the curling iron cover?

I know that curling irons aren't used with as much, umm, zeal as they used to be...so I'm guessing in some cases it might be superfluous.

I have a feeling though, that if these WOULD have been around back in the day, every single member of XYZ (Ali, Ziggy & Jess know who) on my campus would have had a different one for every day of the week. :D

actually, I do. I didn't get it (in apple green, might I add) to use every day, but to use with my lugagge. If I am packing a duffel for over night or the weekend, or for an early AM workout before work, instead of taking both bags, I try to put everything into one. I use the cover over my curling brush/straighting thing to keep it from picking sweaters or shirts. My brush has picked several things and this has kept it from doing so. It matches the rest of my stuff and does the job...even though I have some friends who laugh at me when I pull it out! :)

ok..i tried to edit my typing and ended up resubmitting the post...ughhh..

oh well, I'll ask a question since i am here...

How silly would it be to have my vera monogramed? I am 26, not getting married any time soon (unless someone send Prince Charming my way) but I am not planning on keeping these initals FOREVER, but i would like to keep and use my vera as long as possible. One of my students had the backpack in apple green and her monogram in that blueish color. She uses it as her gym bag and it is tooo cute

I have a lot of things monogrammed...I think even if you do get married somewhere down the road, they're still your initials and it wouldn't be that strange to still carry it. You can always have the embroidery pulled out and redone when you change your name as well.

My ZTA big got me one for Hanukkah (just got it in the mail yesterday....damn FedEx). It's the one that has the bees on it. I feel bad because I'm not really a fan of VB bags. <ducks from the flames> I feel like they're something my grandma can sew together for a lot cheaper. Oh well. Of course, I told my big how much I love it because I didn't want to hurt her feelings. :) I'll probably just use it as a beach bag since she got me the tote bag.

I remember when I first heard of Vera. Way back in 2002 when I graduated from HS several girls I was friends with got Vera Bradley purses. I wasn't to jealous 'cause I thought they looked like diaper bags (and I still do) and if I have a kid while Vera is still popular I'll probably buy one to use as a diaper bag, but i can't picture myself ever carrying one as a purse. At my old college (Clemson) a lot of girls had them, but at my new college (GSU) it seems like they are EVERYWHERE! Especially the new pink, orange, and yellow one (sorry I don't know the names). I'll admit I actually like that one but I've seen 5 or 6 girls with it in the past two days and I like to be original.

OOH, I was so sad when Maison Blue was retired. My collection started out like so:

-I was a new member buying everything I could with letters on it.
-I went to Heartstrings and saw the medium makeup bags with letters.
-Acquired one in Maison Blue with yellow AXD.
-Over the semester, I also acquired an eyeglasses case (i be blind, g), a jewelery bag (they were going to stop making them!), and two wallets (the one with the detachable strap and just a little one). All were unmonogrammed.
-For Christmas, I was given a duffel bag, a hanging garment bag, and a Vera bag, all monogramed.
-For my birthday, I was given the XL duffel bag, also monogrammed, since I had found out that MB was to be discontinued.

So now I just need a coordinating pattern, preferably yellow. Those patterns seem to coordinate better. Also, the monogramming on all my other stuff is yellow. The whole reason I got MB in the first place is that Heartstrings monograms patterns in letters based on sorority colors (So Chi O had the Provincial Red monogrammed in yellow, KKG the Blue Toile with dark blue letters, etc.).

I want to make babies with my Miller. Here is a the list of things I carried around in it today:
a 1" binder
three 1-subject notebooks
a 3 subject notebook
two thin textbooks
a drama textbook that is over 2000 pages
a 32 oz Nalgene
my wallet
my cell
a wristlet with my iPod and accessories
a wristlet with makeup accessories
a small pouch with my pens/pencils/highlighters
my day-planner
mittens and a hat
various other girly stuff we keep in bags (lotion, altoids, etc)

There was enough room to spare that I could easily get a pair of tennies in there too. It carries a little bit more than the small duffel.

You can look on the vera website (www.verabradley.com) to find a retailer near you. A lot of Hallmarks and specialty stores have them. I get some online at www.pecksonline.com. Most online retailers will monogram them.

And just a FYI, Vera Bradley is not a person. If I'm remembering correctly, it has something to do with the names of the two founders' grandmothers.

www.amongtheflowers.com has free monogramming, free shipping, and no tax (unless you're a FL resident). I've always been really pleased with the monogrammed pieces I've gotten from them. The site is a bit hard to navigate but the VB stuff is on there, I promise.

When you hear about KC-- it is generally KC, MO people are talking about-- that is wear the Plaza, Crown Center, downtown all that is..... If you are on the KS side of town looking for things--- you would look to Overland Park.

I got my Vera Bradley at the local Hallmark store--- I live in the suburbs-- but when I was in the store the lady told me that most of the Hallmark stores in KC carry them! The store specifially was Diane's Hallmark in Belton, MO

I don't want to carry two bags on the train in everyday nor do I want something that looks like luggage. I can't fit my lunch, water, wallet, planner, cell phone, and Desmond's stuff for daycare- bottles, extra bib, plus extra diapers, wipes, vaseline, toys- all in the bag I'm using now.

I guess I just need to take everything I want to carry and go to a store that carries these and see what will fit.

Advice would be great though.

I don't have the Miller, so I can't answer for that. I do know a lot of people use the Metropolitan for a baby bag. It has lots of pockets, including one on either end of the bag.

aaahhh! they're multiplying! :p

I really want to get the large duffel in new hope or sherbert! I'll probably have to wait until this summer though when I'm actually making money again. :(

I've joined all of you in this craze. Bought my first Vera Bradley bag today. The pattern is the same as this one, but the bag i got is bigger and doesn't have the tie on it. AND, because it was over a certain amount, I got a $65 Very Bradley watch for $15 dollars. yay! The pattern on it is blue and very cute.

mom loves her spectator bag and wallet...She took it to hospital on Friday when she had surgry....now that she is sick, she has decided to be fashionable and always wear makeup and stuff. Hey, whatever makes her feel better!

now, do I want to get her a Miller bag or just a l.l. bean tote for taking to the hospital?

She goes to the hopsital once a week for chemo treatments and it takes about 4 hours or so...she packs a bag full of magizines, books, drinks, and makeup for afterwards. I wonder if the miller will hold everything?

I am really eyeing on the the silk bags with the tie at the top!

Lilly and Vera is going to break my bank...I really need to save up for a new pair of jeans!

I'm sorry to hear about your mom. I hope the treatments work for her.

On topic, have you thought about the tote? I have it and was using it for the nights i had class after work, so i would carry my notebook, textbook, a book to read on the T, lunch, snacks, a bottle of water, and a wristlet and there was usually plenty of room. The only thing I'm not too fond with it is that it doesn't have a zipper closure, just a loop over a button.

I got the first Vera in the mail today...it is the Greenleaf handbag (older style). And it is even cuter in real life than in the picture! :D
