For real though, I have known people that spent time on lockdown. No one that I was romantically linked to because you all know that the Diva doesn't roll with that circle! I've actually had someone write me from jail and it wasn't funny at all. I don't have a clue how he even got my address. All of a sudden, I started getting letters from him telling me how much he missed me and he couldn't wait to celebrate our anniversary. :confused: WTF?!?! He was my friend's boyfriend in the ninth grade. I never dated him or anything and all of a sudden in 1999 he started sending me letters. At first, it was kind of funny since most of it rhymed and it was corny. Then, he started talking crazy. He started saying stuff how he'd hurt any guy I had been with and that I was supposed to spend the rest of my life with him. He told me that the next letter would be the proposal letter. He even drew me a diamond ring.

The craziest thing about this saga is that now he is writing one of my best friends (not the one he dated in 1991). Once again, she doesn't know how he knows where she stays, either. I have to admit that his poems are still hilarious but it's a little unsettling that he is writing about how she's supposed to be with him and how he'll take care of anyone who tries to hurt her. We've actually talked about whether she should get a restraining order against him when he gets out. I told her that for now she should just not open his letters, mark them 'Return to Sender, Addressee Unknown", and contact the jail to let them know that she is receiving unwanted letters from him. He just seems to wierd to take any chances with.

Now I was sitting here fooling around and I looked at a few profiles of the incarcerated BLACK men. There were 44 BLACK MEN nationwide. However there are 540 BLACK WOMEN nationwide.

I know at first this was a comical thread, but there are 12 times more women than men.

maybe the resources in women's prisons are a factor as to why there are 500+ "jailbabes" and less than 50 "jaildudes"... or maybe the women (1) are more technologically adept or (2) are more comfortable putting their business all over the internet!

While I don't condone illegal activity of any form, I have to stand up for some of these brothas on this one. I don't know the exact statistics, but a SUBSTANTIAL amount of black men are in prison for selling drugs or other non-violent crimes. So, just because they got caught out there trying to make some quick money doesn't mean that they don't possess all of the above qualities. Now while I won't date an incarcerated man, I feel like Angie Stone ... to everyone of yall behind bars, you know that Bamboozled loves ya.

OK, did anyone read this week's Newsweek? The one with Beyonce, Star Jones, and Mellody Hobson ($$ expert) on the cover?? Well, if you have read the article and the round-table interview that follows, then you know what I'm talking about. In the interview, they had the three cover girls and Lil Kim and Terri Woods and Deborah Roberts at the table and Terri Woods made the comment that single black women should consider getting a man when he's coming out of prison. So...maybe someone should let her know about the website.

Ummm......how are these immates getting access to digital cameras and scanners and the Internet when in many states (like MI) school budgets are being slashed and the students and teachers are WISHING for things like this?? I don't seem to understand. :mad:

While there are some prisoners who live better than me, I think that some (I hope) of these pics are from life before prison. Even though that still does not explain scanners and computer access.

PRISON SHOULD EQUAL PUNISHMENT, bottom line. If you want to rehabilitate, FINE but REHAB does not equal NIKES, STEAK. It means EDUCATION and COUNSELING.

I had a cousin in Federal Prison who got to see PPV fights, eat steak, learned how to play tennis, etc. and my azz is struggling.

....who either are in jail for crimes they didn't commit or white collar crimes? Would they still be ineligible for your love?

Some men are in jail b/c they have been framed and legal technicalities prevented their rulings being innocent.

Others are in jail b/c of embezzlement, "cooking the books", cyber-hacking, or insider trading. Would these individuals be marked for life like Hester Prynne as well?

I can see it now. A white collar convict on his first day in prison with hardened criminals. One inmate asks, "What you in for, punk?!"

I hear ya Bamboozled, but in my book, selling drugs is a violent crime and black folks (or any folks) who do it get no pass from me. Drugs have cause much destruction in the Black community and I just could not be down with someone who thought that was alright. If you are selling drugs trying to get some "qick money" then you are stuck on stupid 'cause statistically most folks who do it go to jail. End of story. JMHO

I'm with you, Eclipse. I just can't fluff off such activities, particularly ones which, IMO, have contributed to the breakdown of our family structure by rendering many young men unsuitable for marriage and financial contribution (not necessarily sole-breadwinning) to a family unit.

I agree with both Eclipse and Steeltrap. I was actually quite shocked last week when Bamboozled said that. It just did not sound like her @ all. I would be more prone to date a white collar criminal who was framed than a drug dealer EVER. I have family members on drugs (as we all do), have folks in my family who sold drugs and was imprisoned, and the destruction of the family has been compounded by drug use and abuse. There are too many mothers crying over their kids' dying.

Drug dealing is a VERY BIG THING. Money is tight for a lot of people, but selling does not have to be the way out. Hayle, my money is TIGHT but I have not hooked up with anyone to sell drugs and further destroy the community, nor am I contemplating getting on stage shaking my AZZets. I just keep pressing and if it means working 2 jobs, so be it. My CONSCIENCE will be clear.

Ok, so I see I need to clarify what I'm saying. Like I said in my original post, I don't condone illegal activity in any form and I WOULD NOT date an incarcerated man. My response was to gamma_girl52, who questioned how these men could describe themselves as calm, respectful, loving or friendly. I stand by the fact that while these men (assuming we're talking about drug dealers) are indeed criminals and deserve to be exactly where they are, I can't say that I don't understand the mindset that leads them to a life of crime. Come on now, we all know someone who sells, sold, or has the potential to sell drugs. Some of them are our family members or ex-boyfriends or just associates. I know brothas that sold drugs in college (as I'm sure you do) so they could pay tuition and hit their families off with a little something to take care of home. Does that make them monsters? In my opinion, no...... just stupid and misguided. And I'm not talking about some Nino Brown type brotha. I'm talking about the brotha that grew up around poverty and drugs all his life and in his warped mind, selling drugs is the only answer. Yes, I know that we all have choices in life and that if Bobby Joe down the block got out of the hood and went to college, why can't these brothas? Simply put, some of us have figured out how to play this game and some of us haven't. I guess when it comes to matters like this, I look at the bigger picture. To me, drug dealing is a symptom of much deeper socio-economic issues. It's much more important to discuss how to alleviate those issues, IMO.

And how many of y'all are rockin' to Jay-Z, 50 Cents, Tupac, Biggie, Snoop, Nas, et al., ..... all self proclaimed drug dealers? How many threads have we had about who wants to get with Jay and Nas and whoever else? What makes them so different? Because they didn't get caught? If these same jaildudes (LOL) had got a record deal and a little bling-bling before they got locked up, it would be all love, I'm sure :rolleyes:. So yes, Bamboozled has love for all of my brothas, even the stupid, misguided ones. I refuse to write them off as the rest of the world seems to do.

Aiight, Michael is so articulate and intelligent it is not even funny. I enjoyed reading his letter. You can tell he likes to read A LOT. He has a son and an associates degree in business. He writes a lot of poetry. He likes ceramics. "I used to love to go bowling when I was free..." That statement made me so sad. He took it back how he started the letter...

Ok, Mr. Michael sent another letter. Keep in mind that I haven't responded to the first (very friendly, non suggestive) letter yet. I sense he may get his feelings involved quickly. I thought I expressed clearly in the first letter that we could be friends and I sent him some encouraging words. Here is his letter:

It's Sunday and its raining very badly down here. I was laying in my bed looking out at the fence and I found my thoughts drifting to you. I found his letter to be very articulate. I'm impressed. The letter did sound like it had been written and saved, like CT4 said, "a form letter." I didn't find it to be spooky or anything because I didn't read it like that. It just seems to me that he is lonely and that he doesn't want to start corresponding with a person that is just in it for a few kicks, then will fall off. I see no problem with being his friend or penpal, but PLEASE be straight up with him and let him know that you are only trying to be cool with him. He is looking for a love connection. It gets like that sometimes. I tell my students that everyday. When you are on the scene, you have friends all over. When you go down, you can't get a letter or visit from these same people that were supposed to ride and die for you....

I know you want to support the brothas and all but this whole letter writing thing is creeping me out. You all do NOT know who you are meeting, you just know that some of them have the CAPACITY for VIOLENT BEHAVIOR.

I am so with Eclipse on that letter- it sounded like a formula. How many women have written to him? What is he looking for? Is he still in contact? It is really easy to lie in print y'all.

I know what it's like to be lonely and all but this is so not the answer. Read a book. See a movie. Come to GC and chat with all your long lost friends that you never met, lol. All I am saying is PLEASE be careful.

NoworNever, after reading that letter I clearly know that is a padded letter.... I showed the GC website to my husband, who works in the correctional institution as a lawyer,,, He immediately told me that many of the inmates circulate the different letters they received and have already bogus letters written, this letter definitely sounds like the typical bogus letters that the inmates copy from each other or out of books...

My husband pointed out that this letter is not very credible because the inmate is not connecting on a personal level, he is only saying the things that sounds good to the ears, but nothing of real substance... The stuff Michael "supposely" wrote to you could have been sent to a 1000 other women... He starts the letter with :'Dearest', as opposed to a name, Michael did not mentioned anything specific about your letter, if he even still got the letter....

That is why, this Michael sounds so quick to find 'love' and connection with you, he probably does not have a connection with his family and looking for you and a thousand other women to send him some money or care packages...:rolleyes:

:eek: @ this thread! Being a former social worker in a prison, I will just tell you all to be careful, because these guys can get very attached to anyone that is there for them. A lot of them are left behind by their family and friends, so they will cling to someone who takes the time to pay attention to them, and get VERY hurt when someone leaves them. I've had hard core gangsters crying in my office talking to their girlfriends on the phone. While I don't think there's anything wrong with being there for someone incarcerated, just be careful for yourselves because they can kick some GOOD game in there! :D
