View Full Version : GC vs. Real Life?

Okay, got a question...

are you different on GC than you are in real life? Are there things that you would say on GC that you probably wouldn't say if we were all in a room together?

As for me? Well I am the same in real life as I am on GC in that I speak my mind and definitely do not hold my tongue. On the other hand, I think I come off as pretty aggressive on GC when I am actually REALLY laid back in real life. Basically, when I argue or debate in person, it rarely gets to the heated stage that some of the discussions I am involved in on GC do.

How bout y'all?

Nope.
I'm definitely a lot more outspoken, sarcastic and funny in real life. I bite my virtual tongue on GC. There are a lot of threads here I would like to respond to but I don't because my affiliation is in my screen name. I don't want my thoughts to be misconstrued as the point of view for the whole fraternity. I would like to keep it real but I won't unless I get another screen name which I haven't bothered with.

In real life I sometimes don't have the ability to argue as well as I can on here...simply because I have been told I can write things very eloquently and make a good point. Don't get me wrong...I'll argue my point verbally too, however there is something about having the time to THINK about what you want to write and having only seconds to say it that helps.
But I generally don't get confrontational on here so that's a whole 'nother story.
For the most part I'm the same.

I must say, NOTHING AT ALL like I am and especially was on GC.

If someone from GC were to meet me in real life they would be surprised how different I am.

If someone from real life were to read my posts on GC they would be in for a bigger surprise. :D

It's not like I have split personalities or anything, it's more of a repression.

I'm pretty much like this.

ACTUALLY I tend to be a bit more of a peacemaker in real life. SOMEHOW I always get caught in the middle of two parties during drama, and get called on to help settle it.

Fun, fun

I'm sexier in real life. ;)

Okay, I'm probably about the same, but I think I hold back a little on greekchat -- for the same reason mentioned above, that I'm really presenting myself here as an Alpha Phi. There are things I'd discuss freely in real life that I probably wouldn't here, for that reason -- I'm talking more personal things/experiences that I'd share with my friends. I have a whole wild & crazy life out there... ;)

Other than that, I'm the same. I tend to be pretty opinionated and outspoken and often my emotion gets the better of me and usually wins out over hard logic.

You know, it's hard to say. First of all, I don't think I post frequently and freely enough to give on idea of all aspects of my personality. I don't think any of you know how truly eccentric, neurotic, goofy, dumb, brilliant, interesting and complicated I can really be. Or maybe that's just my ego talking... :o

Truth be told, we probably all reveal more about ourselves on here than we even realize. I was reading through the favorite drinks post and thinking about how something as trivial as that can say a lot about who you are. Basically, bottom line, most people write like they type (for the most part.) Therefore, we're all probably laid bare here a little more than we care to admit IMHO. I'm also kinda amazed at home much a message board can come to life and carry conversations as if this were a real room. It's just astounding how much this piece of cyber space can be a real slice of life.... Or maybe it's just me.

I hold back on GC. As a mom of many, it's hard to read something that someone has posted about, say, something really stupid that they keep doing and not do the mother routine of, "@##! WHAT WERE YOU THINKING?"

It's tough to say, i'm not always sure how my comments rub off on everyone here....

i don't know, for the most part i'm the same except when it comes to some of the controversial threads (abortion, gun control, etc.), i usually don't say much because i don't get into it in real life. I'd be the guy taking a snooze in class during a heated class discussion.

One thing i am certain of, is that I doubt Ksig_RC would be hitting on as many guys as he does here....p.m. button's his own personal internet dating service...

I respect the folks that don't want to project their views onto their entire org. I do, however, wish y'all would get a different screenname because I bet y'all have some INTERESTING things to say! lol!

Dionysus, I don't understand...how do you act in real life?

Online I wear my mind on my sleave, but in real life I choose to tone it down, UNTIL I get to know someone VERY well.

Well, probably many of you barely know who I am because on this board I am kind of boring! Here I just sort of make simple statements and comments and don't let much of myself show... mainly because I like to keep my anonymity. Also, my sense of humor is sort of dry/sarcastic/scathing and I think people who don't know me or see my face as I make jokes might not take it too well!

I'm taller in real life. I'm better looking, too. ;)

I'm actually reserved until I get to know someone better and then watch out! I can't keep my mouth shut. That probably explains why it took me a year of lurking on GC before I registered.

And, of course, my name really isn't Cream.

I am about the same. I am the king of funny stories and situations I get myself into. Always the one there making people laugh. 'Cept in reality its more situational. My humor tends to be very observational.

I also usually put on clothes when conversating with others. on GC, at home, just my boxers and a t-shirt. :)

So true Nick - I gotta lay off the virtual men, I'm starting to flirt with the dudes at rush events, and it's getting a little awkward. Well, not for me - I can just 'no-bid' so fuck it.

As far as here vs. real life - I'm really a huge tool, so I got that going for me in the 'real-life' portion of the presentation. T

here i tend to let my words and opinions flow freely. sometimes i get a lil nuts and just type without thinking. but writing is a lot easier for me than talking. don't know why, but when i speak my opinion or even just have a simple conversation, i am a stuttering mess and have issues pronouncing things. i don't collect my thoughts in pressured situations so things i say on the spot usually don't make sense when spoken and sound better in my head. i have kinda come up with my own spoken language and many of my friends guess what i say.

but anyway, basically i write better than i talk. so sometimes here, i write too much. but i would probably say the same thing if i could say it without stumbling over my own tongue.

I'm alot more sarcastic and silly IRL. I hold back here. I don't respond to a lot of stuffand I don't respond as in depth as I want to sometimes. Not really because I'm representing Phi Sig (although sometimes it is) , but also because there are quite a few GCers I've met IRL and I don't want anything misunderstood/misconstrued and coming back to me. I also think there's somethings random people on the internet don't need to know about me. ;)

I'm a lot sillier! Though not until I get to know someone...
I guess I'm pretty much the same. I don't really jump right into a conversation unless I feel like I have something to add. I DO talk about Greek life a lot, though.

I'm also much shorter. :D

To echo a lot of people already, I do bite my virtual tongue. I'm also fairly shy, and I think that shows to some extent. However, I swear like a sailor, and that's not exactly how I want to present myself or my group.

In real life, I'm shy, somewhat hyper, and I have big feet. I also have a weird sense of humor.

I can't remember if it was greeklawgirl, squirrely girl, Jules, or hootie who said this, but it was something along the lines of,

"OMG, I had a feeling you were going to be this way...."

That being said, I am the same...scary to most, but thankfully accepted by those who matter.

I don't *think* that was me thad said it, but I suspected as much anyway! ;) I love you no matter what!

As for me, I think I'm more reserved on GC than I am in real life. I am constantly aware that people are reading my words, so I want to be a good representative of my Fraternity. Now, this doesn't mean I'm not myself--I just put my best foot forward as much as possible!

I think I'm different in person. I'm more likely to speak my mind in person because it is easier to defend myself than online where many things that you say/type can be easily misunderstood. My views are generally ultra conservative (although after being a school teacher for a year, I realize what crap "No child left behind" is). I don't like being attacked by people I don't know and who judge me based on one thing I said on an online group chat, instead of taking my comments in context with what they know about me. I am myself in the fact that I try to be honest, give decent advice, and be supportive and encouraging when I can.

I used to be the same both on here and in real life, back when I first started on GC. I would comment on almost every post. But now that people seem to attack others for the opinions and/or questions(either flame-worthy or not) they choose to state, I prefer to keep mostly quiet and seldem post. Although I do read this almost daily! I am much more outgoing and vocal in real life.

I don't know. I am probably in some aspects the same, some very different. I tend to get along with a lot more people though in real life though vs. the world of GC. Which is why I have stayed out of a lot of discussions lately on this site. What is going on in my real life these days has taught me to choose my battles wisely and GC is definately not one of them. There are certain people on here though that I have found to be annoying, inappropriate or straight up bitchy and rude, that I wonder how they really are in "real life". I wonder if we would actually get along.
