View Full Version : campus rivalries?

OK, this is for people who go to multi-campus universities: is there a lot of rivalry between the campuses (or campi, whatever you prefer)? I go to the University of Massachusetts at Amherst- that's the main campus, the one with the Division I basketball. UMass has three other campuses- Boston, Dartmouth, and Lowell. With Boston and Dartmouth, it's not that big a deal, because they're Division III schools, and we don't play them- although I've gotten into HUGE arguments with people from UMassD over which school is better.
But with the Lowell campus, oh I hate them. They're so bloody uppity. We play them in hockey (it's their only Division I sport), and nothing makes me madder than them shouting 'UML! UML!' like a bunch of idiots. grrrrrrr.
It's actually UMass's only real rivalry, now that we don't play UConn in anything. Is there anything like this anywhere else?

Ohio University has several campuses, but the Athens main campus is by far the largest. I don't think there's any rivalry at all really.

UCF really doesn't have a rivalry with UF or FSU. We all have Division I football teams but UCF still has yet to achieve the level of success that FSU and UF have had. UF and FSU have a HUGE rivalry though.

Before going to Purdue, I had always been a huge University of Michigan fan. After all, it's in my blood, coming from a family of several Wolverines. (That means I loathe Ohio State!)
But when it came time for me to choose a college, Purdue just seemed like a better fit for me.
The day I became a Boilermaker is the day I began to fully understand the Purdue-IU rivalry. It's so crazy. If you live in Indiana, I am sure you are already familiar with it. You're either an IU fan or a Purdue fan... and each fan believes that his school is awesome and the other school is trash.
They sell shirts on campus that say "Friends don't let friends go to Bloomington." and plenty of things that read "House divided" with Purdue on one side and IU on the other.
A few friends of mine were told that their parents would not be sending a check made out to Indiana University... ever. So they became Boilermakers, too.
Might as well though... after all, we are better! :p
GO BOILERS! (The Hoosiers got nothin' on us!) :)

Oh... I just realized you meant a rivalry between other Purdue campuses... whoops! Guess I didn't read that correctly.
I have never heard anyone saying anything bad about the other Purdue campuses. They are much smaller and I don't even know if they have sports teams? They probably do... but there is definitely no rivalry present. We're too busy with the one with IU to throw someone else in the mix. :)

In my eyes, when ur a Wolverine, ur a Wolverine. Now, we call Ann Arbor the real UofM, and I rarely think of Flint, but I'm a Wolverine, stay a Wolverine, Wolverine till I die!

UMass Dartmouth is an awesome school. People are jealous of our concrete campus. lol

Yeah, UMass Amherst got so jealous, we built some concrete stuff of our own! I swear, the Dartmouth buildings are like a space station, you'd never know there was a campus out there.

I know...a sucky thing about it is that its hard to build upon the concrete. You need a jack hammer to remove a wall. So hows amherst, I have not had a chance to make it up there yet. We're recolinzing TKE at UMD.

How about the Mass budget cuts? I hear Amherst is going to be hit the hardest. What are your thoughts?

Hmmm, recolonizing are they? We're thinking of starting a Beta chapter, and we were either going to try the Lowell campus or the Dartmouth campus....maybe we'll head for Lowell, as much as I hate that place. (I actually have a grudging respect for Dartmouth- I grew up in Bristol County.)
I don't think the budget cuts will be as bad as they could have been, because the new chancellor here means business. He's starting cutting into the more useless parts of the administration- something the last chancellor never would have done, he was a complete tool. AND he told the football, basketball, and hockey teams to make themselves profitable or he'd cut them- about time somebody reeled them in.
How is the cement village these days? How bad are the cuts there?

"The Cement Village" is doing well. We just built two new residence halls. I dont think they are going to be that bad, but no one knows. So which fraternity are you in? Are you trying to start one?

New dorms, oooo.......why do you guys get new dorms? We haven't had any new ones since 1971, and ours are overstuffed every semester. Last fall they were putting kids up in the HoJo.
We've been here for a while, but we're a local- we're the only chapter of our fraternity anywhere. We were thinking of expanding to other schools, and we figured the other UMass's were a good place to start. I want it to be Dartmouth, because I like it better than Lowell. (Boston is a definite NO- turns out the average student there is 35+ years old. Starting a new chapter is enough of a challenge at a normal school.)

The new dorms look kind of snazzy. Air Conditioning, larger rooms, carpet, new furniture, classroom space. You should come down and take a look. Well hes is the greek break-down at UMass Dartmouth.
Fraternities
Sigma Tau Gamma
Iota Phi Theta
Sigma Gamma Rho
Phi Kappa Theta
Tau Kappa Epsilon
Sororities

I think we could use more GLO's on our campus with our enrollment going up and all. You should contact Chris Laib U_CLain@umassd.edu. He is the director of greek life on our campus. He knows a few people that would like to start a GLO.

During the UF-FSU game weekend there were a bunch of tailgating people on the land between my sorority house and the law library and I went over there looking for my car (which I lent to some sisters and they had nowhere else to park it.) I was wearing a party outfit so there was no orange or blue on me. I walked by a car and heard these people say about me, "Oh, she's a Seminole," in this really snide way. I wondered why the heck they would think that, I was wearing a purple top! But then I realized that I didn't have my purse with me, just my keys in my hand...which have a Pi Phi Wine-colored bev opener. To them it looked like FSU's maroon. Anyway, that was one of the worst insults I have ever received. ;)

Well, since I am at a D2 school, no one is an avid sports fan here, but as far as students themselves, sorry Josh8o, but we have lists of San Diego State jokes. But I guess you may have a few about us as well.
For example, when sorority girls here go shopping, you may overhear "Honey, that top screams State" meaning that it's a bit gaudy or too revealing. But I have heard State kids when referring to a social gathering, turn to a UC kid and say "You know par-tee. And no we aren't talking about your O-Chem study groups on friday nights." In essence, it's a petty Baywatch vs. Jeopardy rivalry.
Not to say that there aren't brilliant students at State, but it's just the stereotype.

I guess we are big rivals with Brockport and Cortland. Football wise that is. We're D 3 but the rivalry is pretty intense.
