Pi Kappa Alpha Boys? Come on, everybody- What do you think of PIKES? I go to FSU, where they are the biggest and (One Of the) most popular Frats on Campus. Although everybody pleads to go to their socials and date Functions, they have kinda a "Hottie *%$hole/ Stereotypical Frat Boy" Rep- maybe cuz they were kicked off campus for 12 years, only to come back and be the best? :D

I know they are huge out there. We got one of their rush brochures and its amazing. Its the kind of chapter we strive to be like. We arent huge here at OU. Just a medium sized chapter since we got into trouble about 10 years ago. But they are a good chapter. Never met any Pikes from there but all i know is they are one of our top chapters. If you have a problem hanging out with them because they are "typical frat boy stereotypes" then the only advice i can offer is dont hang out with them.

The PIKE's on our campus were actually not recognized by the university for a while. They're kind of one of the lower key houses, yet they manage to rush well and are definetly social. They helped us out a lot when we were first trying to get on campus, showing us some of the ropes and stuff, giving us connections when we needed em so I'd say they're pretty good guys.

The Pikes in Florida seem to be the leaders, although there are a lot of really good fraternities in the state. At Florida State and at University of Miami the Pikes tend to be the football players.

I have quite a few buddies that are PIKES, all of the guys I played basketball with in HS are PIKES at UH, the love it. I love partying with them, but thats about all I can think of them being good at. They arent the brightest guys in the world, they are like the your typical "frat", not fraternity. Much love though, we dont have them at my school, unfortunately, or I might be one.

The PIKES on our campus are trying really hard to fix their rep because they have a sort of "bad boy" image. I know there were a few scandles back in the day about girls getting raped at their formals, but now they are consintrating on Phil and them seem to be doing better. I know they are a pretty good house down at the UA too, but I have only heard that from a sister who went to their formal.

Pike was kicked off our campus right before I pledged DZ and then they came back on later. Now they have just lost their house...I don't exactly know what that means for them. My school is losing fraternities. We just lost TKE (they were doing really stupid, irresponsible things) and I think that SAM left too. My school is strange in that we have only 6 fraternities that are big and active and there are like 6 more that do absolutely nothing and they never mix with anyone, nobody has been to their house, nobody knows anything other than the fact that they supposedly have a chapter...quite weird.

Pikes at Nebraska, have the most guys of any chapter, but no house. They are a really, really, really diverse bunch of guys everything from some of the best campus leaders to some guys who care nothing about studying and only party. All the Pikes I've met though have been pretty cool, down to earth guys.
I think theyre forgotten about sometimes since they don't have a house. And occasionally you will hear rumors that they'll sign anyone, at anytime - not sure how true that is.
But, yeah, so anyways - some pretty decent guys IMHO

I have to agree with most of you here and say that I have an affinity for Pike's too. I have only had good experences with them, and dated one in college for over a year. Even after we broke up, he and his brothers treated me with the utmost respect, and I can guarantee that behavior was a rarity. My little brother is heading to college next year and I will definitely encourage him to go Pike!!!

Hey everybody thanks for all the great words about Pikes! I know the FSU chapter has really been busting their butts since re-colonization. When they chartered, they Initiated 137 Brothers as the Re-Founding Fathers, instantly becoming the third largest Pike Chapter in all the 210 active chapters out there; and becoming the single largest chartering in Pike history!
I've been a Pike for almost 10 years now and it truly changed my life for the better!
I always like hearing good words about my Brothers and the opinions others have of the Fraternity.

One of the most amazing (hilarious, attractive, always makes me smile) guys I met during college, who happens to be a Pike, recently moved away...I didn't realize how much I'd miss him till he is gone! Anyway, all the Pikes that I know are great guys...I think the way they joke about the stereotyped Pike guy is what was so great about them. They knew what people thought about them and always turned it into their benefit, it was great. Anyway much love to the Pikes out there.
And to all you other fraternities too! ;)

Since this thread was resurrected, I just wanted to add that my favorite hot guy is a PIKE from the University of Illinois (or Illinois State--I can't remember which one). Meeting him was such a surprise because rarely do I ever come across fraternity brothers in Hawaii!!! He's a former A/E, A/F and Banana Republic model...and the fact that he's all of that and STRAIGHT is a big plus. Haha. It's still in the beginning stages but I love spending time with him!

PIKEs are awesome at Virginia Tech. They are most girls' favorite fraternity. They are all hot, really easy going, fun to be around, and they aren't jerks like a bunch of guys in other fraternities are. However, most of the frats here dont like Pike because they think that Pike will take anybody and that the pledge period isnt "tough" enough. But, I could care less about that-- we love them!! We did homecoming with them 2 years ao and they were sooooo fun.
One other thing--- Pike was kicked off of VT years ago and just recolonized in the past few years. They got a house on Greek Row this year, and I think that they already are the biggest frat in terms of numbers, which says a lot. They are definitely in the top 5 frats and will stay there for a while!

As a Pike, it's both flattering and reassuring to hear that at many campuses where there are Pikes, my brothers are practicing what our fraternity teaches. On the other hand, our chapters that are not successful are having their charters come under review.
The chapters at FSU, Virginia Tech, and Nebraska have all been re-founded after significant absences on their campuses within the last 3 years. Each has over 100 members, and is among the elite chapters of PiKA. This is due to our headquarters seeking out men that are incredibly diverse and are extremely dedicated and competitive. Likewise, each of these chapters has a pledge education program that does not haze and is successful in educating pledges, rather than what "harder" programs in other fraternities do.
I find it humorous that other fraternities try to bash Pikes by saying that we'll "give a bid to anyone" or that our pledge ed program is too easy. My guess is that they are jealous that there are SOOOO many beautiful sorority women who love Pikes. I don't know about you, but I'd much rather spend my fraternity experience meeting sorority women than spending an inordinant amount of time having a "hard" pledge period.
Thank you to all of you who have added your impressions of Pi Kappa Alpha on your campus, etc. I hope that there are similar threads for other GLO's, so that we all can brag on the great things that Greeks do. But I expect Pikes to set the standard for the right way for fraternity men to treat a woman, teacher, random person, etc.

The Pikes at UCO are great guys. They're a group that we can always count on for support (and vice-versa).
The Sigma Nu and Pike chapters are both brand new at UCO -- we recieved our charters about a month apart from eachother.
They actually invited us to their post-chartering party (lots of us went) and we had a great time!

If you expect this....... then you are DEFINITELY getting it from the PIKEs at Virginia Tech!!!! They are really the nicest and most laid-back guys on our campus. They have so much pride in their fraternity and you can really tell when they are out on campus. Tri-Delt loves these guys--- they have never been anything less than completely respectful to us, and we always have SUCH a great time when we do socials with them. They really care if we are having a good time, and if they think we arent, then they do something to fix it. KEPike, I really think you should be so pround to call the PIKEs at VT your brothers--- they give a GREAT name to your fraternity!
p.s.-- just a question--- i remember a year or so ago, everyone referred to them as PIKA. they have since changed it to plain PIKE and ask everyone to call them that too. is there a reason for this change, because they seem pretty adament about only being called PIKE, rather than PIKA. if you cant say, thats perfectly understandable, but i was just wondering.

Pi Kappa Alpha is called by a variety of names. In olden days, we were often called Pi Kaps or Pikas (pike-uhhs). When Pi Kappa Phi came along, the more widely know Pikes was used and Pi Kaps was pretty much abandoned. Although I've met several old old alums that refer to us as Pi Kaps.
As far as Pike vs. PiKA goes, my guess is that it done to differentiate us from Kappa Alpha. Either is used depending on where you go. I know that many chapters on the West Coast are taught to only say Pike, probably just because of the correlations that can be made with name (Pikes Peak, Pike Spike, etc). I liken it to FIJI with Phi Gamma Delta.
In our chapter, Pike is what people call us. However, we mostly refer to ourselves in writing and in more formal settings as PiKA since we are Kappa Epsilon Chapter. This can cause some confusion. Unfortunately, in our campus newspaper and various campus newsletters, we get called pke, ke, or pka. We prefer the correct Greek writing.
I would say call them whatever you feel most comfortable with. If they take offense to PiKA, just say you wanted to call them by their correct Greek letters.
On a different note, Jeff Labreque from VT consulted our chapter this year. From what I understand (since I'm an alum), he did a good job in helping reinforce the same values and beliefs that VT Pikes have with my chapter at Rockhurst. But again I'm flattered that you and others have such a positive view of my brothers. It certainly validates my Greek choice as well as my love for Pike, PiKA, or any other name that we are called!

One of my best guy friendds/ex boyfriend, Matt, on campus is a PKA ... and they just got booted from campus for 6 years!! I love these guys, they're awesome... hot, fun, can throw a good party, and ... ok ok, they're the typical meatheads... but then again that's the rap they get everywhere...
Pi Kappa Alpha = hot, ass-holes, who are meatheads, and beat everyone up (no offense... that's just what rumor has it) Anyway, I digress...
But I love them, started hanging out with them beginig of last year when I met Matt. I was supposed to go to NC for a Mountain Weekend with them this past weekend when they had to call it off cause IFC was coming down on 4 fraternities for [aparent] hazing. The verdict is in: and they are out!!
The sad thing is that Matt has never been to one of his fraternities Mountain Weekends (and he's a JUNIOR) because he didnt pledge til spring of his freshman year, then last year he broke his leg in 6 spots and had to go home to Florida for the semester, and this year it was cancelled cause of IFC. POOR KID!!
Ok, enough of my rambling... time to go console matt... :(

I had a crush on a Pike once. He was a real cutie. When him and his fraternity brothers came to serenade our sorority, he smiled right at me, and I just melted inside. He worked at a deli, and when I got a sandwich from him one time, he was super-sweet, and even gave me extra chips on the side. On campus, I would sometimes look up and he would be somewhere off in a distance looking at me with a faint smile, but as soon as we made eye contact, he would look away. What was up with that!? The few times I'd gone back to the deli with the interntion of introducing myself, he wasn't there, and after a couple of visits, I just stopped going. I'd graduated since, but once in awhile, I would still wonder what that boy is doing now. I never even got his name.

bolingbaker,
I talked to my friend, Matt, when he came over last night. This had been the first time since I heard about this... and anyway, apparently they are still in the appeal process, but he said somthing to the sort of, "... we don't need a campus...", so I don't know what he meant by that. But he said that their Mountain Weekend was rescheduled for the spring, so apparently they'll either say f*#k IFC, and go off campus, or they'll just be on probation. It's weird, i had a friend in a different fraternity tell me that PKA were off campus, then I asked Matt if he'd gotten my email and if it were true, and he goes, yeah. So I'm really confused at the moment.
I'll keep you posted though.

It's always bad when a chapter closes.... But if they were hazing what the hell were they thinking? The Pikes on our campus don't haze (they're one of Pike's newest chapters founded last April) and they have quickly risen to be one of the top fraternities on campus. Hopefully if they make it through the appeals process they can reform their organization internally.
But IFC booting you for 6 years seems a little excessive if it's just a 1st time offense.
axotiger
10-09-2002, 11:07 AM
Yeah I know... but see I'm not sure if they WERE hazing or not. I mean everyone knows that they're rowdy, crazy, and loud... but as for hazing... I can't say. It's just a bad situation.

One of my best guy friends in college was a pike, but they were kind of jerks like totally bailing on us for greek week - only one of their brothers (my friend) participated in greek week with us.
They hazed like nobody's business and then it all finally came to a head in like 97 or 98 when one of their members was drunk and speeding through the main thoroughfare on campus. One of the campus police that was on foot tried to signal him to stop and the guy ran the police over and instead of stopping he sped up and dragged the guy all the way down the street - parts and pieces all over the place, it was a horrible tragedy. But the pike totally hit and run - the next day he took his car in to get cleaned and repaired skipped town. His parents were very wealthy and spent all sorts of money to try keep him out of trouble. He finally turned himself in a few days later.
Anyways, they were suspended by the university, but the fraternity maintained the chapter "off campus".
Here's the article:
A NOPD officer escorts Josh Gimelstob, accompainied by his attorney, Jerome Winsberg, into the NOPD Fatality Unit Tuesday, Jan. 23.
Courtesy of the Times-Picayune
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
J oshua Gimelstob, a 20-year-old University College sophomore and a Tulane tennis player, was charged with negligent homicide and felony hit-and-run in connection with the death of Tulane Police Sgt. Gilbert Mast. Gimelstob turned himself in to the New Orleans Police Fatality Unit Jan. 23 at 4 p.m.
Each charge that Gimelstob received carries a maximum five-year prison term and a maximum $5,000 fine. Police are investigating an obstruction of justice charge as well. Although Judge Calvin Johnson set bail at $25,000, Gimelstob was set free on a recognizance bond until Monday over prosecutors' objections. His family has until then to produce the money.
The incident began at 4 a.m. Jan. 20 when Sgt. Mast and Tulane Police Officer Don Dorsey pulled over a car for a routine traffic violation on McAlister Drive at the Irby Hall crosswalk. As the policemen exited their cars, they heard a vehicle speeding down McAlister. Both officers signaled the driver of the Jeep Cherokee to stop, but it accelerated toward them. The Jeep first hit a parked van and then Sgt. Mast on the opposite side of the street. The Jeep dragged him 40 to 50 feet, where he came to rest under a parked car. Officer Dorsey had managed to jump out of the way. The driver then continued down McAlister, ran the red light at McAlister and Willow and turned down Willow. When Tulane Emergency Medical Service arrived, Mast had no pulse. He was pronounced dead of massive internal injuries at Charity Hospital at 4:30 a.m.
That night, Gimelstob had been out to several bars, including Nick's, Friar Tuck's and Se–or Phrogg's, with the Pi Kappa Alpha fraternity, which supplied four buses to take participants to and from the bars. While at Se–or Phrogg's, he met a female Tulane student, whose name has not been released. When the buses returned to the Broadway fraternity house at about 2:30 a.m., Gimelstob and the woman went to his house to watch a movie.
He then dropped her off at Sharp Hall. After Gimelstob drove away, the woman heard a noise as she was walking to her dorm, but did not connect the noise to Gimelstob. She stated that when she exited the Jeep, Gimelstob was alone.
On Jan. 22, Gimelstob's attorneys directed police investigators and officials with the district attorney's office to a Jeep Cherokee at Benson Chevrolet in Kenner. Gimelstob allegedly sent the vehicle there to be repaired. They also began to negotiate for Gimelstob's surrender. His lawyers, Jerome Winsberg and Jeffrey Smith, insisted that a bond hearing be set immediately after his arrest.
At 4 p.m. the next day, Gimelstob, accompanied by Winsberg, turned himself in to the police Fatality Unit. Commented Winsberg, "You can't compare it to what happened to the family of Sgt. Mast, but this has devastated this family. They are very, very fine people."
Gimelstob is a member of Tulane's tennis team. He received a partial athletic scholarship from the university after being ranked 10th in the East while in high school in New Vernon, New Jersey. His brother, Justin Gimelstob, is a nationally-ranked tennis player who played in the U.S. and French Opens. Robert Klein, the coach of the Tennis team, was unavailable for comment.
According to Ken Dupaquier, the Director of Public Safety, the media reports were wrong in asserting that Gimelstob was a member of the Pi Kappa Alpha fraternity. University sources claim that Gimbelstob was neither a pledge nor a member. Ronald Levine, the president of the fraternity, would not comment.
In response to the question of possible expulsion of Gimelstob as a result of the charges, Tulane spokesperson Robyn Ekings said, "As with any possible violation of the Honor Code, the university has begun an investigation which is waiting for the court's decision before any action is taken."
Tulane Police Lt. Stan Cosper said that although Gimelstob has been charged with this crime, "history, God, and the justice system will judge him ... [So Gimelstob will need] the support of the university and the community."

forgot to mention - the reason why they said he wasn't a member is because he went below hours and so was temporarily enrolled in University College at the time which is for part time students...but he was most definitely a member.

Yes, that was a horrible situation. I've heard that the University told our Supreme Council that they would never let Pike come back to that campus. Quite understandable. However, it is our Eta chapter, so it's been around forever.
Luckily, our top-flight expansion team was able to persuade the school into letting them come back...when the time was right.
So eventually we will get to go back there.

Pikes here have a bit of a ominous reputation, but I think that most of the rumors are embellishments on the truth. A lot of people know "what the 'notorious' Pikes are known for" even before they are familiar with the Greek system, so I think that is why they are stereotyped. I've heard some other fraternities talk trash about them, and they say nasty rumors, so it doesn't help. I know a few Pikes, and they have been sweethearts (one of my friends is dating a Pike pledge, hottie!), but another girl I know had a really bad experience with the Pikes, so it's all relative to who you know I guess.

My husband and I both went to Cal State Northridge, where the Alpha Xis and the Pikes didn't mix all that much (though they do now), but the first time I saw him in his spiffy Pike jacket I thought I'd never seen such a cutie! We got together a few years later at an exchange, and the rest is history. Two other couples who met at that same exchange also got married.
And my brother, one of the most decent men on the planet, also pledged Pike at Northridge but ended up transferring to UNLV fairly quickly and so truncated his greek experience a bit.
Along the way, I became a Pike little sister and have had the pleasure of meeting many, many Pikes in the years since. The Zeta Omicron guys aren't always standard-setting on all fronts, but their brotherhood and loyalty is second to none. So I'm pretty proud to say that 2 of my 4 favorite boys joined Pi Kappa Alpha, and the other 2 -- my sons -- are legacies.

All I really know about the PIKES here is that no one really goes to their parties as much b/c they usually don't have shuttles running and their house is too far to walk to. Here, the 'popular frats' are mainly the ones that consistently run shuttles to their parties to make it easier to get to. Ive heard good things though!

I had a good time with them. They are building back up their chapter like my chapter is. So the numbers were pretty well even. I think we both have around 40 members. Overall, they r great guys. I did meet some PIKES and they were all SO sweet, one even asked me out, but I was dating someone at the time.... should have taken up the offer! any ways, I think that it's all organizations greek or not are filled with good people and bad people. It's how the organization as a whole organizes and conducts themselves. :)

Yay, another Whitewater girl!
I'm an alum, but my boyfriend was a chapter founder of Pikes at UWW :) Glad to hear they're still keeping up their good name!!!

My dad was a Pike at Stetson (before they had their charter revoked) and he always says that it was the best thing he ever did in college. His chapter still has their bi annual Oyster Run where they just party like the good ole days! In fact, when I was little we used to have his chapter's fire truck in our warehouse, my favorite thing to do was go ride it and ring the bell!

well i'm gonna hafta disagree with the fsu pike lovers out there...after hearing great stuff about them and then attending a few of their socials, i'm not impressed...there are other frats at fsu that aren't as hyped up that definitely should be over these guys....don't get me wrong, there are a handful of real "good guys", but ladies look elsewhere for a real man at fsu...

The president of our chapter is actually engaged to a Pike! He bought her the biggest, most beautiful boulder of a diamond ring...
Anyway, to be honest, I haven't met any Pikes from my school (UCR) but I have had to opportunity to meet several Pikes from the University of the Pacific where they seem to have a really strong chapter. They all seemed like really (really, really) attractive, all-around nice guys... they're actually holding their rush this month! I'm sure they're going to have no problem attracting quality guys (including my ex-boyfriend).
XOXO,
Annie.
