Hello Everyone !
(Im new to the site, so apologies if this thread has been discussed)
Im sort of wondering is how does the Greek-letter Fraternities and Sororities feel about the Order of the Eastern Star being a Sorority?
I myself am a Star and will not get offended by anyones opinion on the matter.
I've had my sistars come to me in my Chapter that brought up wanting to stroll and call...
I personally do not see any harm in OES Chapters having fun strolling just as long as its clean simply because of our teachings, that are biblical.
How do you all feel ?
(Thanks in advance for your input ):)

Why does it matter how people feel?
The search engine comes up with a few threads about Greekdom and Masonry and the Order of Eastern Star.

Strolling and calling is not what makes us sororities. We are sororities because we are sisterhoods and in that case, OES is also a sorority and so are many other fraternal organizations that don't have sorority/fraternity in their name. As for wanting to stroll, no one can stop you and many are doing this anyway outside the D9 so do what you want. As for the calls, they are becoming ridiculously similar and often sound too much like ours. Overall I don't care one way or the other but I just take issue with those orgs that just want to play copycat or go out of their way to express how they are not like the D9 (because we are so bad supposedly) and then want to do EXACTLY what we do. That is my only issue.

LOL
It's just many of the younger Black OES who insist on mimicking some of the traditions of BGLO sororities while claiming that they are our mothers and we are mimicking them.

Not at all. In order for a man to be a member of the OES they have to be a 3rd Degree (Master) Mason in good standing.

Hmm I wonder. Would OES be considered a fraternity or sorority? I know it is mostly women, but IIRC a chapter can't meet without the presence of at least one Master Mason.

I am not a Freemason.
My gut feeling is that I would rather that OES members didn't stroll or call, primarily because it just doesn't seem congruent with the centuries of masonic tradition that I am aware of.
Practically speaking, you should be able to do what you want at your own functions. I would just advise against it in mixed company if you want to avoid drama.

This (also recognizing that I am on the outside looking in). I saw an O. E. S. "line jacket" the other day, and it just seemed odd.

Hello everyone I know this forum is nearly one year old. I am a active member of The Order of the Eastern Star. OES is a masonic fraternity we do not step, strut etc or have a call. Every Eastern Star should act accordly and follow all bylaws and obiligation. I'm sure if your WM or WP found you stepping or calling you would be in TROUBLE. If anyone have any questions please inbox and I will respond ASAP!! Thanks

OES fans should wear their own clothes :)
Basically, when it comes to emblems of fraternities, sororities, fraternal orders, or other membership based organizations, you wouldn't want to wear a symbol just because you support what it is. It would make people think you are a member when you are not.
If you're a fan, just tell a member that you're a fan and hopefully they will accept the compliment graciously.

I am soooo glad someone brought this up!
I was questioned by a member of a certain fraternity on campus who told me that he thinks that its wrong for Eastern Stars and Mason to wear paraphernalia. Mind u, he's not a Mason... I love him dearly so I gently told him that When or IF he becomes a Mason he will understand that the Masonic family has nothing to hide! So why would we not be permitted to wear paraphernalia like any other organization? Just because YOU (generally speaking) don't know our secrets doesn't mean that we are in a "secret society"... Or that we "worship the devil" for that matter, but that tangent is reserved for another thread.
Now granted: I don't believe that we should stroll, or do calls or step. That option is reserved for the divine 9. I love that they step and do such... It gives our culture a certain "Je' nais se qua"(sp?) that we own. However what we have to understand is that "Stars and Squares" gave birth to the Divine 9. They understood the value of a "fraternal bond", from our Fraternal Order. For us to call and stroll is about as silly as a mother who stays on the phone all night long because her teenager did so! What would our sign be?! *side eye* hopefully not something no one unworthy should ever see! Our call?! I'm afraid to ask.
So SiStars, Bruhs, I implore u...
Leave the child's play to the children!
We came first
We are "CALLED according to HIS purpose"! What other CALL do we need?!
Remember what makes us so Lovely and Different.
Why u became a member in the first place.
If u can't answer all of these questions maybe u should get with someone in your chapter who can.
Sorry I went off... If you walk in a room with a pack of dogs the one that will cry is the one u step on :/

Please stop with the "we are superior" rant. Respect our organizations as we respect yours. What we do has meaning to us just like what you all do has meaning to you and no you all did not give birth to us. When my organization's founders came up with the idea to create a teachers' sorority to support and educate teachers and students and give back to the African American community, they were not thinking about following behind any other organization. Please stop the foolishness.

Okay once again, I'm a active OES. First of all OES don't wear crossing jackets, OES has members that have a mind of there on and sometimes do the wrong things. Two OESFANS should wear there on clothes because they don't know how to protect the star and if you're challenge it will be taken. Third " OES and Mason" did pave the may for Divine 9 Masonry dates back to the Boston Tea Party. Divine Started in 1906.

You did not pave the way for the Divine 9.
Also Masonry goes back much further than the Boston Tea Party, and Prince Hall was not even initiated until 1775; Two years after the Boston Tea Party.

I said that Masonry dates back to The Boston Tea party which the men were masons so you do you're research, two some of the founders of Divine 9 fraternities were masons and Masonry is a Masonic Fraternity long before Divine 9 that's another reason why we say we pave the way. So I know my history from Divine Active Member of Alpha Kappa Alpha as well. You can say all you want you're not a M.M nor OES you don't have the ritual you're just going by online info. Don't take it personal.

One more thing you are saying Prince Hall he didn't start masonry he had to go to England to get his on charter because they would give him one and you have more affiliations beside PHA. You have AFAM, Int'l. MFAM, FAM and United National. So keep reading online that's what's wrong with everyone trying to tell everyone in the org what's what. I know masonry dates back before the Boston Tea Party. The Bible DUH Solomons Temple the masons help build it. I'm talking about when it got started in the US

How do you know none of the people who responded aren't Masons? And just because Masonry has been around before the D9 does not mean that the D9 or college fraternities in general owe anything to the Masons. Also Prince Hall was initiated in a military lodge in the US, then formed another lodge that was stricken from the roles at the creation of UGLE.

It took you two posts to even figure out what you were talking about. And as for the rest of your 'point' founding members having dual membership doesn't even imply "paving the way" much less prove it.
