View Full Version : The Amazing Race 14!!!

The teams have been announced! Here is CBS's straightfoward introduction to them (http://www.cbs.com/primetime/amazing_race/collections/ar_14_cast/), and here is Reality News Online's more editorialized report (http://www.realitynewsonline.com/cgi-bin/ae.pl?mode=4&article=article8630.art&page=1).
The teams include SoulForce founder Mel White. He will race with his son, Mike, who wrote for and produced Dawson's Creek, Freaks and Geeks and Nacho Libre. He also wrote and appeared in School of Rock. We also have the first deaf racer, who graduated as valedictorian from the Colorado School for the Deaf and Blind.
Alas, those wanting to cheer on Team GC -- nittanyalum and MysticCat -- will have to wait. http://www.smilieshq.com/smilies/sad0137.gif (http://www.smilieshq.com)

Anybody else want to slap some sense into Tammy and Victor?
I like Tammy and Victor, I really do. But I really don't like how everything has to be HIS decision and Tammy just friggin' enables that!
I still like GayDad/GaySon, DeafKid/SigningMom, and the stunt men. The basketball sisters are also starting to grow on me.
I felt really bad for the couple eliminated last night. What bad luck. They really could have still been in contention if they stayed with the pack.

I can't stand Tammy and Victor. Where's the team work/communication?
I like the mom and son team, Cara and Jaime (friends of mom/son team), and the basketball sisters. I don't have a favorite team yet but I'm really liking this season so far.
Oh, and what was up with that husband/wife team from Virginia? I felt really bad for the wife. She was so worried that her husband was going to be upset and yell at her for taking the wrong path. Poor thing.

Tammy and Victor won't last long if they keep up like this. This race takes teamwork!
I don't have a fave yet either. I'm not sure I will either. There are several teams that I think are good but nobody is really standing out. The only ones who stand out are the ones I can't stand.

I'm still not sure I have a favorite team to root for or even a favorite team to hate at this point.

Forcing someone to run in her thong is NOT okay, IMO. It's one thing to run in the cold, but to run in her skivvies in Siberia on national TV is not cool. They should have at least provided the last two women with spanky pants or something.
At this point I'm rooting for gay dad/gay son. I really hope Margie and Luke get what's coming to them.
This probably has got to be the most boring season ever.

You're right, it's not too bad. I totally forgot about TAR The Family Edition. Now THAT was the most boring season ever.

You're right, it's not too bad. I totally forgot about TAR The Family Edition. Now THAT was the most boring season ever.
Yes, that season was wrong in so many different ways. Ugh.
I saw your other post and was going to disagree about this season being boring. Since I complained that last season had absolutely no teams that were likeable or worth cheering for, I have been pleasantly surprised that I actually like all the teams. Well, save for arrogant Victor, however, his sister makes up for it.
However, maybe that is the problem... no true villian team this year.
I laughed out load watching the teams try to figure out how to get the cheese down the hill, watching Tammy try to figure out how to do a summersault (?!?), wondering how long it takes to find a house that needs repair, and, well Luke just makes me laugh period.
Now, the trans-Siberian railroad was a bit boring, because all the teams had to take the same train. However, it seems there have been more opportunities for strategies/various flights with the air travel this season. No more "these are the two or three flights you can choose from."
The addition of the "Blind U-turn" was also long overdue. No one ever would do it before, so this has been a welcome addition. However, I do think that the u-turn should only be in the game when it is realistic that a team can complete both challenges and still stand a chance of not being elimnated. Those two challenges (stacking wood and the shutters thing) both appeared to take HOURS. Therefore, by the producers placing it in that episode, it virtually guaranteed that any team that was u-turned would be eliminated. That is a little excessive, IMHO.
I also loved, loved, loved the first few episodes that were in Austria, Switzerland, etc. The scenery was just absolutely beautiful.
Anyway, my opinion is thumbs up this season. Having a villian to cheer against, or having Team GC involved, would make things a bit more interesting, but overall I am satisfied.

Those two challenges (stacking wood and the shutters thing) both appeared to take HOURS. Therefore, by the producers placing it in that episode, it virtually guaranteed that any team that was u-turned would be eliminated. That is a little excessive, IMHO. Editing can be misleading. According to Amanda and Kris in their Reality News Online interview (http://www.realitynewsonline.com/cgi-bin/ae.pl?mode=4&article=article8746.art&page=1), they were only about 10 minutes behind the stunt brothers at the pit stop. They said it it took them about 10 minutes to find the place to take the shutters (although it seemed like forever) and that it didn't take that long to do the woodpile the second time, but it took them 10 minutes to get to it from the u-turn and 10 minutes to get back to the clue box.
That means that, even with the u-turn, they probably wouldn't have been eliminated if they hadn't bailed on the woodpile when it collapsed the first time. That's what cost them the race.
(They also said that Kris also got lost coming down the mountain in Switzerland and ended up at the road like Linda did. He ran and still got to the bottom of the trial before 3 other runners on the mountain.)
I agree that it was time for the blind U-turn, and although it resulted in the team I was liking the most getting eliminated, I think Marge and Luke were right to use it (although they did it for the wrong reason). It's a race, and if you have a chance to get rid of one of the strongest teams, go for it.

I thought Marge and Luke said they used the blind U-turn exactly for that reason: they were a strong team and tried to eliminate them. Did I miss something? They said they did it because they wanted to give Jaime & Cara more time. Targeting the strong team was smart; doing so to protect another team, not so much, I don't think -- it's an indication that you might be letting your alliance with another team cloud your judgment.
We saw a little of the same thing Sunday night, with the drive to the stadium. Tammy and Victor did the right thing by heading on once they had directions instead of waiting. Marge was smart to follow, while Lucas spent too much energy worrying that they weren't waiting for Jaime and Cara.

The Mai Tai Trannies! They looked like a fun crew to be karaokeing in a cab with, at least! Everyone looked like they REALLY enjoyed that task.
Margie and Luke are definitely a team to be reckoned with - she completed that entire leg's tasks alone!
I do agree that the rules need to followed and I'm glad that they are suffering the penalties... I wonder if there is a "third pit-stop penalty, you're out" rule?

I worried about that team because they weren't world-savvy, wily, or physically strong. So I wasn't too surprised when they were eliminated early. But I almost cried when he said afterward that there was no one in the world he would rather have shared this with because there was no one that he trusted more to watch his back. And this was AFTER she had messed up again and again, finally resulting in their elimination. They may not have the million dollar prize, but I'm glad they have each other.
The first time I saw Phil signing to Margie and Luke "You are team number one" I cried. This show pushes all my emotional buttons and makes me cry a lot. Do you guys remember the season in which the last leg was in southern Florida and the African American couple in the lead didn't have money to pay their cab driver? The other two teams were closing in on them, but they wouldn't leave their cabbie and run to the finish line until they had flagged down enough cars to beg the money to pay him. I saw shouting at the tv, "Give him and IOU and run to the finish line!!" OMG, I'm tearing up just remembering it. I wonder how that couple is doing now. Anybody know? They were going to use their winnings to try for an in vitro baby.

Yeah, that was the first time I've seen TAR throw out such an obvious ratings-booster stunt. I was disapointed in them for that, but if it keeps their ratings high enough for another season I can live with it.
Did anybody catch the basketball sister mention that she had to borrow underwear since she doesn't wear any? It was funny to see her personality emerge a little big, along with her skin. Her light was hidden under the domineering personality of her big sister, who always seems to advise her of exactly the WRONG way to turn when she's driving, but little sister was so obviously proud of her body that it made me smile.

I can't wait to see next week with Luke going at it with one of the basketball sisters. WTF man. You just don't shove a girl like that. I hope he gets penalized for something...I just can't stand him anymore.
At this point, I really don't have any favorites. If I had to choose one, it'd have to be Tammy and Victor. They're the only ones who don't annoy me.
According to this blog (http://igbopeople.blogspot.com/2009/04/uchenna-joyce-agu.html) they both work for "Resolve" now. No mention of whether they were still a couple.

Like I said, at this point it's Tammy and Victor that I'm rooting for. It's funny because I couldn't stand them at first because Victor was so mean to Tammy. But they've really solidified their relationship and come to know and understand each other in a way that helps them work as a team better.

Jen, that blog makes it sound like they are together! That is great, they are nice people.
I also like Tammy and Victor. I didn't think I would from the way the season started, but they have grown on me. They are definitely, as a couple, the least irritating. I like Luke's mom, but Luke is a pill. I like the nice cheerleader, but her partner is a biatch. The sisters are nice, but not good racers, and I have little patience for stupidity. I greatly dislike the brothers! Cheater, Cheater, Pumpkin Eater!

Okay, I'm biased - but did it go down like this:
- rush to the clue box
- one of the sisters pushes Luke
- Luke throws his elbow
- sister calls him "bitch".
Did I miss anything? Cause I'm thinking that the name calling wasn't necessary - especially if she pushed first.
As an aside - gypsyboots now knows ASL for "bitch". Look - it's an educational show!
eta - I'm calling a draw here at the end. The sisters shouldn't be so,um, witchy, but Luke & Mom overreacted.

In the first incident, it looked to me like they were running for the clue box at the hair salon at the same time, and she basically ran up behind him and into him, and she put her hand on his back to brake, thereby touching him. Throwing the elbow up was totally unnecessary by him.
Later on, on the mat, I thought Margie went totally overboard, bringing up the whole, "You're black...you should know what it feels like.". Cheese and rice.
And yes, while Kisha and Jen were smiling, I think it was more of a nervous reaction to a stressful situation (kind of like when you are under tension and feel as though you are going to laugh in an inappropriate situation...like a funeral for an example).
That's how I saw it go down.

I totally agree... I think they both overreacted, but Mom and Luke were way out of control... Yes Keisha and Jen should not of been smiling, it was insensitive, but it was not out of control like the black comment and mommy's outrage and luke's storming off... And the only intended violence that seemed to appear was the clear elbow Luke gave...

I thought they were both running to the clue box at full tilt and she wasn't able to brake quickly enough so she bumped into him and put her hand on his back in a reflexive "catch yourself" kind of movement. He threw the elbow. Adrenalin was high. I thought they were doing the nervous laughter/smiling at the end. I kind of want to watch that part again. I happen to have a son who has a hard time not laughing when he's in trouble, and I know how infuriating it is to be yelling at him and have him smiling or laughing, but I also understand that it's how he reacts to being in trouble. I don't think Mom was going from 0-60 at that point, it had been brewing all day with repeated interactions and fuming while in the cab.
This leg of the race was so incredibly close among the first three teams. Wow!
I'm so glad the cheater men are gone but the girls with the dancing almost lost that huge lead. I'd guess that unless someone makes a huge error, the top three tonight will be the final three. The girls mess up too often but have managed to stay in it because others mess up worse.

I do think everything got blown out of proportion, but I do have to come to Luke and Margie's defense on a couple of points.
Simple fact: Luke is deaf. I don't think Keisha (Jen?) meant to run into him at the first clue box, but Luke's elbow was an instinctive reaction for someone who cannot hear and is wary of being attacked from behind.
Keisha and Jen could do nothing but complain about what happened in the cab to the next clue. In my opinion, they were hoping/looking for something to happen the next time they ran into Margie and Luke.
Luke should have let it go when they reached the check in. But, he was angry and wanted to make his case known. As Margie said, all his life, people have made fun of him when he signs. When Margie saw the girls laughing, I don't blame her for her first reaction being that someone was making fun of her child. I think most mothers would react the same way.
I did have to laugh a little at Victor and Tammy literally caught in the middle. Victor looked like he wanted to be anyplace else in the world, but standing between two fighting teams.

I agree, but it's a combination of whoever can use their wits AND run the fastest. They got outrun, plain and simple.
He should have said to the calligrapher (in Chinese): "Stamp us, and then give us a head-start before you stamp the other teams. If we lose, our parents will (LOL) cry themselves to death back in America".

I'm not sure where the 'laughing' part is? Is it at the 2:10 or 2:12 mark?
To me, Luke put his butt out at the first clue box (kinda like "boxing out", as one would do in Basketball) and to me, this is proof that he was WELL AWARE that she was there, deaf or not. So I don't really buy the whole, "it was an instinctive reaction to being taken by surprise because he couldn't hear her coming because he is deaf" excuse.
I think Jen and Kisha were just smiling at the total ridiculousness and tenseness of the situation. I think they treated Luke just as they would have treated a hearing person.
Luke's problem is that he's a smug little whiner. Don't go on about people never treating deaf people like everyone else, then get pissy when you're treated like everyone else. He threw a temper tantrum because Jen treated him as she would have any other contestant. If you want to be treated like an equal, don't pull out the deaf card every time something happens that you don't like.
And Margie - you have a GROWN ASS SON. Translate for him, but let him fight his own battles instead of acting like a giant asshat yourself.

I agree, he knew she was there, and to me it looked like she put her hand on his back to stop her momentum from pushing him down.
They were both scrambling for the same thing, and at the second box, it was his momentum that pushed her into the box, nearly knocking her over. (btw, good save - she's got good balance, I would have landed on my face, on the box!).
I also agree that the "laughter" was more of the nervous, "this is awkward" type. My kid does that too, and I sometimes want to "Wipe that smile right off his face!!" Haha (child abuse JK;)) He can't help it! It is what he does in a tense situation!

Haha (child abuse JK;)) He can't help it! It is what he does in a tense situation!I think lots of people do, either reflexively or (as I think one of the sisters may have said) on purpose to either diffuse the situation or keep cool themselves while the other side gets hotter.
Frankly, the whole thing reminded me of a basketball game where things are getting a little rough. Call a time out and let everyone chill a minute.
ETA: Here is what Phil had to say about it (http://popwatch.ew.com/popwatch/2009/04/phil-keoghan-bl.html). He says he thinks the laughter was nervous. But I swear, I think there were one or two times, before and after, when one or both of the sisters said they would smile to make the other person madder, meaning it was on purpose, though not with the intent of making fun of his deafness.
But I love Phil just for saying this about Jaime and the choreography competition: "Yelling at someone who doesn't understand your language when you're in their country -- are you serious?"

I'm trying to remember if, during other extended legs in other seasons, the clue actually said "pit stop" before they received another clue or if the leg just seemed to go on forever?
The swimming challenge would have been my best one so far. MC and nittany: my words of wisdom when you dominate the race, don't ever choose the challenge where someone has to judge whether you are doing it well enough. It always takes longer to please someone else than to just endure whatever the other task is, except, maybe, with calligraphy. It messed up the mean pretty girls with choreography and it messed up Tammy and Victor and Jen and Kisha this week. Both teams would be much further ahead if they had done the swimming first.
I wasn't surprised by the "To Be Continued" because of the timing of episodes left.

When Victor and Tammy started talking about how bad it would be for them to be eliminated in China, my first thought was: You guys are toast.
Has there ever been a season of TAR where the women outnumber the men at the end? 4 teams with 6 women and 2 men currently.

I have to say, I was ecstatic that the mean girl (sorry for the nice one, but she's attached to a witch) didn't win a leg!!
Gosh, did the timed jumping thing mess up Tammy and Victor or what?? They did pretty well in the swimming thing, bummer they didn't go there first!
My husband was saying that they should have just stepped off the diving board at the same time and gravity would have brought them down in sync. I wonder if they could have done that, instead of bouncing up?
Still dislike Luke and Margie, I really hope their snarkiness causes Karma to catch up.
As they said, Babye!
I also wondered why they weren't just jumping off at the same time, and since they were bouncing first, I assumed it must've said it in the rules.
I was laughing my ass off when Jaime and Cara hit the mat, all excited they'd won a leg, only to be told they hadn't lol.
Luke and Margie are so annoying. I can't stand his whiny behaviour.
I was happy Jen decided to continue the task and finish it out, but WTF was with all the Chinese bashing in the first part of the episode?! They sounded like Jaime and Cara.

The diving task should've been so easy. I don't get why they all didn't practice it on land first. If they had just practiced the same approach, they should've bounced at the same time. Both of those teams are made up of pairs that are about the same size, so it should've been easier for them. As someone who used to be on dive team, that task was driving me nuts.
ETA: I think it would've been more fun if they had made them complete a certain dive, like an inward. Would've made for some great TV!

WAAAAYYYY back when I learned to dive, I was told to stand at the end of the end of the board then walk forward three steps. Turn, then one two three jump. Just watching the divers I would think they would have figured out some variation of the 3 steps then jump thing.

Finally got to watch it last night.MC and nittany: my words of wisdom when you dominate the race, don't ever choose the challenge where someone has to judge whether you are doing it well enough. It always takes longer to please someone else than to just endure whatever the other task is . . . No question! And especially with the diving -- it was obvious to me that would take forever.
My husband was saying that they should have just stepped off the diving board at the same time and gravity would have brought them down in sync. I wonder if they could have done that, instead of bouncing up?Maybe. But the height was enought that disparities in weight could come into play. I think Tammy needed to be a hair ahead of Victor so that the weight thing would even out, but trying to coordinate that would be hard.
Jen and Kisha can leave now and can take their ugly American attitudes with them. So can Cara. Meanwhile, Luke and Margie, give what happened before a rest and concentrate on your own race. Holding on to grudges ain't pretty or helpful.
Funny how I didn't really like Tammy and Victor at the start of the race and now they're the only ones I really do like. (Margie and Luke, you've almost blown it with me.)

Ditto, ditto, ditto
And I like that Victor realizes how much they've grown as a team

I thought the same thing when they kept talking about how badly she had to go. Run to the mat, get checked in and then run to the bathroom. The was the most expensive bathroom visit those two sisters have ever had.

The only thing was that it appeared that neither of the last two teams spotted the mat. They knew that they would have to run around a bit, and you could tell when she got out of the car that she could barely walk! She was doing the GottaPee Dance and if they were truly going to have to dart around that huge place looking for the mat then I think sacrifcing the minute to pee in lieu of it slowing down their movements while searching for the mat was the better choice at the time.
And very funny SWTX!

Yeah, when you gotta go that bad, there's no holding it anymore, you gotta GO. I was thinking she'd be offered a contract for the bladder control medication with that commercial "Gotta go, gotta go, gotta go right now"

I cannot believe that girl stopped to go to the bathroom!! Oh well, that was a million dollar potty break!
Now, I have to watch another week of that AWFUL girl who hates China because people don't speak English, and that WHINY kid and his enabler mother.
Please run fast and make good decisions Victor and Tammy!!

I thought I posted last night, but apparently I didn't submit.
Memo to Team GC - wear Depends!LOL. No need to worry, though. Unlike certain contestants, I can keep everything under control.
I cannot believe that girl stopped to go to the bathroom!! Oh well, that was a million dollar potty break! You know, the possible jokes are endless. In the post I thought I submitted last night, I called it the million dollar pee.
Or pissing away a million dollars?
To pee or not to pee, that is the question.
Clearly the answer is not to pee. But with the outfit she had on, I doubt anyone would have noticed if she just let it go.
Now, I have to watch another week of that AWFUL girl who hates China because people don't speak English, and that WHINY kid and his enabler mother.I was really hoping to be rid of Jaime and Cara.
Please run fast and make good decisions Victor and Tammy!!May it be so!!

I'm actually watching the finale as it airs, something new for me this season! I chime in on the side of she shoulda peed and run, who cares when there's a million $$ on the line? Someone ran in the freezing cold in a thong, you can't pee down your leg to get into the finale? Priorities. Don't worry, MC, I inherited my father's camel-like bladder. And if it came down to it, I would pee on the run. :)

I've not been a faithful follower of TAR, but I swear, if you two are ever a team, I will watch every. single. episode.
Seriously, y'all have to apply some day. I would almost feel sorry for your not-a-chance-in-hell competitors.

Me too!! Yay Victor and Tammy, they deserved it!Watched it last night. I was glad too. I just wish Jaime had come in 3rd. (Okay, Cara too, but only 'cause she was with Jaime.)
I have to admit -- I felt bad for Luke. He was doing an awesome job with the surfboards. I mean seriously, putting up #1 and then #8 without the ##2-7 reference points. I was really impressed. Too bad China gave him trouble. That would just have to be so discouraging.
One day, nittany, one day.
